Information about David
I read English at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, and then completed the Graduate Diploma in Law at City University. I am currently working in tech in Amsterdam. I have worked as a professional tutor for more than six years; during that time I have spent over 500 hours tutoring around 30 pupils with ages ranging between 8 and 40. Typically, my students` written work improves by a full grade over the course of a term`s sessions.
I am a firm believer that the best way to improve a student`s abilities is to help them discover how to enjoy the subject, and therefore to improve their confidence. Significantly, I am not a school teacher, having to cater for a large class: as a private tutor I have the luxury of being able to focus on specific areas to refine.
One of the main issues with tutoring is that it can encourage spoon-feeding of information. I counter the issue by asking lots of questions that will challenge the student to think carefully and solve the problem using their own brain. Those who understand not only what the answer is, but why it is - because they themselves have engaged with that process - will inevitably be more confident with the subject and fare better in exams.
I like to establish a plan early on, tailored towards the student and timeframe, to give a clear direction to the sessions. I am happy to be flexible according to their commitments. I am also available for marking and feedback out of session times. I will usually be able to mark work within 24 hours. My rates listed are for the session: they include my travel, lesson prep and marking.
In addition to ordinary teaching and exam preparation, I can offer help with university applications, personal statements, and Oxford/Cambridge interviews. I offer a 90% discount to Oxbridge applicants from schools with little history of sending students to these universities.
Availability: I am only available for online tutoring, and can be flexible with when and how
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: I have been tutoring for four years, have taught more than 30 students, and have spent over 500 hours teaching in one on one tutoring sessions, aside from out of lesson planning, marking, and feedback. I particularly enjoy teaching English at GCSE level and above, but have tutored in a wide range of subjects including the Sciences, Mathematics, and History, for an age range between 8 and 44.
I have also taught at revision study days: giving lectures, leading seminars, and reviewing work for approximately 50 A level students at a time.

David is a fantastic
David has been an outstanding English tutor to my Yr13 son. He is clearly very intelligent, enthusiastic and thorough when it comes to preparing sessions.
Working with David my son has made significant progress in articulating and organising his thoughts and translating them into clear essay plans. More importantly David has constantly engaged and challenged my son and sparked within him a real interest and joy in the subject. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
David has been fantastic in preparing our son for the 11+ English private school entry examinations. He is very thorough in his approach, asks a lot of challenging questions, and keeps our son interested and engaged.
Davids strong background in and passion for English language and literature clearly shine through and he has been able to convey this to our son, whose understanding, appreciation and application have progressed noticeably.
2-3 weeks ahead of the exams we feel he is well prepared. It has been a delight to work with David and we would 100% recommend him.

David has certianly helped my daughter with her A level English literature revision. Each session was well planned, very productive and she found his enthusiasm for the subject very inspiring and motivating. He is professional and easy to liaise with. I wouldn`t hesitate to recommend him.
Excellent tutor. Very attentive and responsive with a passion for his subject and clearly a highly intelligent English student who seems to enjoy developing others using his expertise.
David is a perfect teacher who helped me with my personal statement, which got both conditional and unconditional offers. I`d strongly recommend David to anyone who need help with essay writing and personal statement.
Thank you for your very useful tutoring and looking forward to have more lesson from you.
Best wishes, Betty
I was struggling with maths and English, and with gcses looming I needed help. David was able to isolate the problems with my essays and give me comments and exercises that helped me improve my marks from b/c borderline to `a` standard, as well as improving my critical analysis skills of poetry and drama, alongside teaching me the gaps in my maths knowledge. David is a fantastic tutor who will really get the most out of every session and improve your ability and grades and I would give him my highest recommendation.
David is an brilliant teacher who really gets the most out of my children in class. He is very polite and kind and is extremely punctual to classes. He also stays for longer to teach at no extra cost. He understands if you find something difficult and rectifies that and develops your skills even further. I would recommend David to anyone- he is outstanding.
