Information about Andrew

Throughout my career I have sought to improve my own education for the benefit of others. The qualifications which I have acquired for the post of teacher of English will serve future employers greatly. My post graduate experience of studying English language involved the study of linguistics, literature (both contemporary and classic) and language acquisition. This was accompanied by the complimentary study of the role of English in the curriculum for my subsequent Diploma of Education.

In 2020 I have worked in several Secondary Schools as both a daily cover supervisor and as a specialist tutor on a daily/weekly/termly/yearly basis in varied providers in a range of assignments.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: Since September 2017 tutoring assignments have run concurrently with my role as an English tutor for the Learning and Skills Group, which is an independent school who are specialists in raising achievement for students currently under-performing within the mainstream sector. I have previously held the role of Senior Lecturer of English Language and Literature at Park Lane College (later Leeds City College) and whilst employed there I acted as lecturer in access foundation, A Level English Literature, A Level English Language, GCSE English and Functional Skills internal modifier.

In my most recent contractual post as English teacher at The King’s School, raising student achievement and aspiration was key to planning and delivery. In this capacity, key stages 3 and 4 student levels of achievement -in accordance to present frameworks for grade allocation - improved dramatically from 40% - 64% pass rate for English in grades A**- C.

Having completed the equivalency professional qualification for the Society of Education and Training in 2016, I have taught KS3 and KS4 English Language for Edexcel, AQA and Eduqac/WJEC. I am aware of, and implement, Assessment for Learning and understand how this improves the quality of literacy skills. This is achieved through consistent marking with scrutiny (which is critical and supportive in terms of quality feedback with provision for student improvement.)

Along with my understanding of assessment policy, students are also expected to critically analyse and peer-assess to enhance both content and literacy skills. Quality of my assessment has received recognition and praise from senior leaders within my present post.
My training is on-going and webinar sessions delivered by a range of exam boards (AQA; WJEC), companies and councils have helped to improve classroom management and maintain healthy co-operative relations within and without the classroom environment, due in part to the revaluation of teaching methods and critical questioning techniques. Combined with my long experience of working within the classroom I am confident in stating that I have a very good rapport with the students that I have taught and that I am currently teaching.

Most recently I completed the equivalency professional qualification for the Society of Education and Training (QTLS) and have taught functional skills English and Maths, KS4/5 English Language through a range of awarding bodies including WJEC, EDUQAS, CELTA and AQA.

Recent events have resulted in further experience of tutoring online and maintaining healthy co-operative relations with students by responding and supporting learning promptly through chat windows, e-mails and skype instruction.
