Information about James

Hi, my name is James, I currently work for a CRO (Contract Research Organisation) based in Nottingham as a Research Chemist. Before that I was Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the University of Nottingham, on a project split between the Schools of Chemistry and Medicine, and have additional experience in the chemical industry. I completed my Chemistry PhD at the University of Nottingham and graduated in July 2016. I studied a four year undergraduate Masters degree at the University of Leicester (MChem Hons.), for which I achieved a 2:1. I was the only person in my year to be published in a scientific journal due to work done for their masters project the study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. I also have A-levels in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and General Studies.

Availability: I am currently available at weekends.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: As a Research Fellow I have supervised Ph.D and Masters level students, driving forward their understanding for chemistry as well as assisting with their lab skills, report/thesis and presentation writing. I have also led sessions for Ph.D students to improve their synthestic knowledge.

During my PhD, I have supervised students in undergraduate organic chemistry labs at the university. My role was to teach and guide the students through the chemistry they were performing, both practically, by demonstrating new techniques, and theoretically, by going into the mechanistic and analytical details of the reaction.

As a PhD student, I also have an individual project student (masters level) assigned to me, and I am responsible for supervising their practical project within the lab, as well as being on hand to assist the other project students within my research lab. My role is to guide them through their project covering practical techniques, organic mechanisms, and retro-synthetic analyses of their project towards the synthesis, and help them to understand why they are doing what they are doing from both a chemical and biological perspective. Towards the end of the project, I also assist with questions they have about writing their dissertation.

I have also supervised students with Masters degrees while they worked in my research lab as summer postgraduate students.
