About me

I have a full time job as a consultant software engineer with Zuhlke (pronounced Zul-ker) Engineering, where I write software professionally for a variety of clients which have so far included international retail banks, start-ups and security companies.

I have spoken at three software conferences on the topics of programming paradigms and software quality. Part of my job is coaching my colleagues in software engineering and delivery, so teaching is a very important part of my job, and something I`m always looking to improve.

In my free time I code, go climbing and am learning the Georgian language :)

Qualifications

Degree: BEng from Imperial College London in Computing (2:1)
A-levels: A*A*AB in Maths, Further maths, Physics and German, respectively

What the student will learn from me

How to build working software, from scratch. In the process they will learn the basics of the internet and operating systems.

How I will approach teaching coding

I will tailor the programs we build to the individual student. If the student is most enthused by writing web application, we`ll learn by writing a series of simple web applications. If they want to make games, we can start on the command line building games like Os&Xs, and move on to more advanced programs like mastermind.

Fostering enthusiasm for the art of crafting software is what I believe will most strongly determine how successful I am in teaching the student, and I do think that this is my responsibility as the teacher. It is in this area that I see the majority of approaches to teaching coding fail.

Availability: In general I`m available after 1PM Sat-Sun, although there may be some exceptions for conferences, holidays etc.

Since graduating from university I have been working at Zuhlke Engineering as a consultant software engineer in London. In this job I write code every day. I have been writing code for almost 10 years, and in industry for almost 7.

While in the education system, I worked as a programmer in every summer holiday since the year I got my GCSEs.
