Information about Jane

I am an Assessment Specialist for OCR A` level Biology and have worked as an examiner and an author, writing and marking examination papers. I have also worked as a tutor for six years and specialise in preparation for A level Biology, UCAT examinations, and also for GCSE Biology, Physics and Chemistry. I teach all subjects exam boards.

This year, sixteen out of my 18 A level students achieved A* - B grades, 12 A.A grades. Of these, 10 went on to study Medicine and Dentistry, 1 Veterinary Medicine, 2 Biology and 2 Psychology. One student also went to Cambridge to study Natural Sciences. My GCSE students also did very well this year, with 8/10 gaining Level 9s and 2 Level 7s.
Every year, many of my students go on to study Medicine and Dentistry and to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. Therefore I am experienced in UCAT preparation, interview skills and university applications and I am happy to offer advice and guidance on this.

I have also been a teacher for 26 years, as a Head of Science and Biology and a Senior Leader. I am interested in building a constructive and supportive relationship with my students. I strongly feel that the greatest difference in achievement can be made by helping students deal with barriers to learning, such as revision techniques, the ability to write extended explanations or the ability to solve problems. My primary focus is building confidence and teaching students how to discuss ideas and think about the application of concepts in the most challenging contexts. I try to encourage students to think critically and learn to link ideas together so that they become more confident in dealing with all type of examination questions.

I am experienced in teaching the following specifications:
OCR A/OCR B Edexcel Salters-Nuffield Edexcel B Edexcel International AQA CIE International

I am very interested in the use of technology to support learning and I am experienced in the use of experimentation and enquiry to develop confidence, creativity and curiosity in my learners. To me, the most important point about tutoring is using the opportunity to develop a good working relationship with the students. As the sessions are usually one to one, there is an opportunity to really find out about the skills that need to be developed and also to give opportunities for in depth questioning. We can vary pace and look for challenge to give a sense that progress is being made. All of this will impact positively on confidence, and in my opinion it is confidence that makes the greatest difference to learning.

Availability: I am now taking enquiries into the academic year 2024-2025. However, most of my after school slots are booked and so my availability is mainly during the daytime or for holiday revision sessions. Please do get in touch if you would like to inquire about tuition. I Many thanks.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have worked for twenty six years teaching Biology, Physics and Chemistry and also as a Head of Department and Senior Leader. As part of a school Senior Leadership Team, I have contributed to the strategic planning and direction of the school, with specific responsibility for Teaching and Learning and Able,Gifted and Talented students. I also develop course materials for teacher training providers. Aside from teaching, I am an Assessment Specialist for the exam board, writing and marking A level Biology papers. My particular areas of interest are in helping students of all abilities really push themselves to the highest levels and also in teaching students to cope with and excel in exams and assessments.

Amazing tutor! My son says she makes him feel like he understands Biology, in a way his class teachers have been unable to. Jane teaches and supports in a way that ensures my son understands difficult concepts. She has helped him to understand how to tackle the A-level paper and given him structure for answering questions. My son`s confidence with biology has improved greatly since having lessons with Jane. Working with Jane has been a great decision and I would highly recommend choosing her.
