Information about Justin

I am confident, hard-working and qualified CELTA graduate (pass B) with a Masters degree. I am highly motivated, flexible and able to work with a high degree of initiative and creativity.  I have been an English and Academic skills tutor since March 2016. I was graded as outstanding in my most recent lesson observation (11th November 2019). I have created interactive online lessons using Microsoft Teams since March.

I have taught academic skills (essential essay writing skills) on the pre-sessional course at The University of Bath for the past four summers.

Between March 2016 and June 2019, I was a sessional English tutor at Kaplan International College, a college for international students gaining a certificate required to gain undergraduate and postgraduate places at universities in the UK. Students are predominantly aged 16-21 and there are also a number of mature learners. I taught a variety of different modules including academic English, further language support, IELTS, academic skills and research projects for pre-masters students on Business, Law and Social Sciences and Science and Engineering pathways.

The modules I taught were often intensive and students were required to achieve a language requirement set by universities by the end of their course. My lesson objectives were, therefore, focused on preparing students for their assignments and exams. This has shaped my teaching practice and has taught me the importance of motivating students by setting achievable lesson aims and linking activities to students` goals. Whilst teaching English for academic purposes, I have been standardized to assess students for both written and oral assessments and I am able to understand different IELTS levels.

Since 2019 I have worked as a sessional tutor on the undergraduate foundation programme at Oncampus London supporting students` progression to university. I have taught a range of modules including Business and Academic English, Skills for Business and ONCAMPUS Test of English (OCTOE), an English language proficiency test. I have offered sustained and intensive support to students, three of whom gained a merit scholarship.

I worked in publishing for seven years. I worked successively as an assistant for the late publisher and literary agent Desmond Elliott and the literary agent Clare Alexander. I worked alongside the author Candida Lycett Green for fourteen years. In September 2008 I revived the Betjeman Poetry Prize (www.betjemanpoetryprize). I was the prize administrator between 2006- 2014 and served as a trustee for the charity which works to promote literacy, foster creativity and provide a platform for new voices, via its annual poetry competition plus a creative learning programme in schools and holiday clubs at Waddesdon Manor. The prize closed in December 2019.

I am particularly interested in teaching writing as this draws on my background in publishing and promoting literacy. In 2017, I proofread Dane Brooks’ MPhil thesis on newspapers and the internet for the Department of Literature at Essex University. I have also provided editorial support for the author Susanna Johnston on the publication of ‘John Fleming and Hugh Honour: Remembered’ (Gibson Square Books, February 2018) and ‘Rescuing my Father’ (Zuleika, December 2019).

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing and keeping fit.
