Information about Laura
I have taught on English language and literature GCSE, Functional Skills and Access courses at further education colleges across South London for seven years. At present I am a GCSE and Functional Skills English teacher at Kingston College to students re-taking AQA`s GCSE 9-1 syllabus. I also teach entry-level English to LLDD (learners with learning difficulties and disabilities) part-time at Richmond Adult Community College.
I have privately tutored GCSE and A-level learners on AQA, OCR and Edexcel English syllabuses during the past year. I have particular experience supporting D-grade GCSE students to gain a C.
I was awarded grade one (outstanding) during my most recent formal lesson observation (June 2017) at Kingston College. I have worked as an English improvement practitioner, supporting members of the English teaching team with lesson planning and delivery at Southwark and Lewisham College from 2013 to 2015.
I have access to new exam resources and specification details and work day-to-day in a college environment that supports its students to achieve 9-5/A-C grades.
One-to-one tuition should help a student grow in confidence and be a space to develop work completed during lessons. I use a mixture of activities, such as games, puzzles, quizzes and online resources alongside exam practice and assessment to support my students. Learners are welcome to choose aspects of their course to concentrate on during our sessions and I am happy to liaise with students` class tutors regarding topics for study.
Availability: Weekday evenings 5.30 - 8.00 pm. Local students only.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I teach English full-time between Kingston College and Richmond Adult Community College. I tutor GCSE and Functional Skills classes and LLDD (learners with learning difficulties and disabilities) groups.
I gained my teacher training qualification with the UCL Institute of Education during 2011 and completed my training practice at Southwark College, where I then worked for four years as a GCSE English teacher and improvement practitioner within the Access to Higher Education department. I later taught GCSE English language and literature at Richmond Adult Community College, where I became programme leader for the department, coordinating and teaching GCSE, Functional Skills and LLDD English courses.
Prior to teaching, I was a journalist for a regional newspaper in the South West. I reported local news and wrote features, arts reviews and editorials. I was also a freelance music and features writer for the Big Issue magazine. My journalistic experience gives me insight into teaching language analysis and evaluating writer`s intentions and reader`s responses.
