Information about Abigail

Hi, my name is Abi and I am a qualified Primary Teacher living in Stockport. I`ve been teaching for a few years now and love working with children, whether in a classroom setting, tutoring 1:1 or voluntarily through holiday clubs and summer camps. I`m currently studying part-time but am keen to continue teaching through tutoring, either in person or online.

I enjoy teaching and working with children as each one is so unique in their character and abilities. It`s a privilege helping them to develop these as well as guiding and celebrating their academic progress, according to the national curriculum. I tend to be quite structured when teaching and follow a routine as I believe this helps children to stay focused and know what to expect. However, I love the outdoors, being creative and reading stories, and try to encompass these into my teaching where appropriate to engage my students and make learning fun. For example, I have recently been teaching Year 4 English through the story The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, including clips from the movie to inspire creative writing. At the same time, I was helping a child revise entrance exams in preparation for Year 7. I am very flexible and happy to adapt according to the needs of the child, either planning lessons to fill a gap in learning, to support what is being taught in school or assist with homework and revision.

Outside of teaching, I love art and craft and trying new things, some of which have included rowing, playing guitar and singing in a gospel choir. I am especially interested in other cultures, having grown up in West Africa, and so I love travelling to visit friends in other countries. I am confident speaking conversational French and have also had a go at learning German, Spanish and Korean! I spend a lot of time with family, playing games and taking our dog for walks.

Availability: I am available Tuesday to Friday from 08:30 until 18:30 UK time. I may be able to tutor on Saturdays and during the evening on week days.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I am a qualified primary school teacher with 3 years of teaching experience following a BA in Primary Education (ages 5-11) with First Class Honours, ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ reports against the Teacher Standards. Since qualifying, I have spent 2 years teaching in a Catholic Primary School near Manchester and 7 months teaching voluntarily in West Africa. While in the UK, I was a full-time classroom teacher in Year 1 and so I have a strong foundation in teaching phonics and reading skills. However, I have also taught a range of subjects across Key Stages 1 & 2, including Maths, English, Science and French.

Most of my experience is classroom based and so I have a strong understanding of what is going on in schools, resources and schemes of work that are commonly used. However, I have also had experience home-schooling and tutoring 1:1 across both Key Stages and tailoring the national curriculum to individual children.

More recently, I have completed training in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and additional courses for tutoring online. I am keen to take this further with a keen interest in international education.
