I have been fortunate enough to have studied and graduated from a number of institutions, namely Durham University (Philosophy BA Hons), the University of Law (Graduate Diploma in Law), and the Quantic School of Business and Technology (Executive MBA).

My academic experiences have helped me to hone learning techniques that I prioritise in my work as a tutor. I am a firm believer that learning should never stop, so I encourage my students to build a thirst for knowledge, and provide them with the tools to go out into the world and quench that thirst.

My approach can be summarised as S.H.O.R.T., so-named because the goal is to achieve large gains in as short a time as possible. This is the approach in more detail:

Systematic

The first action is to identify the learning targets and to create a signposted path towards our final destination. This may be exams, a job-interview or even just personal interest, the end-goal will vary between people, as will the journey to that goal, however the approach is always the same.

Honest

It`s of absolute importance that both student and teacher are honest with one another. Without honesty, communication breaks down, and ultimately the journey will be a longer, more laborious undertaking for both sides. As a tutor, it`s my duty to be honest about my students` current position, goals that are realistically achievable, and how I feel about their ongoing performance. Likewise, it is essential that my students are honest about their understandings, how they feel about my approach, and how much work they are putting in. With an open and honest dialogue, the journey becomes a far more enjoyable experience.

Organic

People are engineered differently, and therefore not everyone can be taught the same, something our schools suffer from because of inflated class sizes. A teaching approach must be organic for each individual student, which means understanding how a student learns best, how to interact with them, and how to nurture knowledge in each unique mind.

Robust

Learning isn`t about memorising for exams, it`s about turning over all stones, seeking dark spots of understanding, and shining a light over weaknesses. Though memory may get you through exams, it will not make a stronger, more confident person, rather it will only encourage the mindset of someone who is always looking over their shoulder, waiting to finally be caught out. Successful people question their understanding, find the holes in their knowledge and look for challenges, and only a firm, robust approach to learning can achieve this.

Training

Finally, it`s crucial to mention that gains aren`t made without training. In a world where physical gains have become the focus, it`s easy to forget that mental gains are just as, if not more important. Focus, determination and strength of character are only developed by working hard, by training. No approach that is honest about what it can deliver will forget to tell you that you must work hard to achiev
