Information about Robert

I am an experienced, friendly, and patient teacher and historical keyboard specialist based in Muswell Hill. I have been a teacher, organist and choral conductor for over ten years and currently hold the post of Director of Music at St John the Evangelist Palmers Green, and am a piano and vocal tutor at the New London Performing Arts Centre.

I believe that musical talent is not something you are born with but can be cultivated through good tuition and practice. I take an analytic and holistic approach to teaching that helps students to develop a framework for understanding music whilst cultivating essential practice skills to ensure they are able to make thorough progress quickly. I am a supportive and adaptive teacher and I tailor my teaching style to the strengths of my individual students. I intaegrate historical context, style and theory of music into my practical tuition to allow my students to develop their general musicianship as well as technical proficiency.

I am currently available to teach piano, organ, harpsichord and music theory and singing at all grades.

Availability: I am available weekday evenings, and Sunday afternoons.

LOCATIONS
I teach harpsichord in my home on my two-manual Hubbard replica of a 1769 instrument by Pascal Taskin (double manual French) where I also offer theory and composition tuition. I offer organ lessons at home on a Johannus digital organ which is in the Dutch Baroque style with two manuals and a straight pedalboard.

I am also available to travel to students with whom there are good public transport links. If you`re not sure if that`s you then please get in touch to discuss.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I began teaching the piano and singing while still at school and have continued ever since, expanding to teach other disciplines including organ, harpsichord, singing and music theory. Over the years I have taught students ranging from absolute beginners to experienced players and guided them through various syllabi (ABRSM, Trinity, Rock School) at every level from grades one to eight.

EXPERIENCE AS A MUSICIAN
As a teenager I was a Runner-up Cathcart Young Composer of the Year and served as the Conductor of Barrow Silver Band from age sixteen to eighteen. My piano playing has taken me to the Sage Gateshead and on a tour of Germany`s Black Forest. As an organist I regularly give recitals across the country, and as a harpsichordist I have served as Director and continuo player of Stabat Chamber Orchestra and give occasional recitals across London.

As a freelance bass-baritone I sing regularly across London and my choral performances include the revival of Parry’s Judith at the Royal Festival Hall with the London Mozart Players and for the European premiere of In the Name of the Earth by John Luther Adam’s for the BBC Proms.

I studied piano with Caroline Clemmow, organ with Alan Phillips, improvisation with Neil Wright (Farnborough Abbey) and harpsichord with Alan Cuckston. I have in total over ten years experience teaching both in schools and privately, having started tutoring younger students in music theory and the piano whilst still at school, and going on to become a peripatetic music teacher with North Lincolnshire Council. I have since worked with young and older pianists, organists, singers and electronic keyboardists from absolute beginner level to Grade 8.
