Information about Katherine

Hi!

My name`s Kat and I`m an English Literature graduate with a 2:1 Bachelor`s degree from the University of Bedfordshire. I have extensive knowledge in a wide range of texts, and have experience teaching at a secondary school level. I have taught, and studied, the AQA syllabus at GCSE level, as well as know the syllabus for Barton Peveril Sixth Form College due to being an ex-student. While I have not taught the Peter Symonds syllabus, I am well versed in some of the texts studied there.

My passion for helping students achieve their goals is something that drives me to be the best teacher/tutor I can be. Due to my experience in the classroom, I know how to tailor content for each individual student depending on what they need help with; confidence, subject knowledge, and more. I am able to build positive relationships with students, and have seen some of my past students progress successfully over the time I had with them. My strong love for the subject means that I am able to make English more enjoyable and accessible for students, in turn making their learning easier and more fun.

Having gone through the education system only recently, I am well aware, and understanding, of the struggles that come with learning new content and revising in an effective way that can ensure high marks! Not to mention having to teach myself a lot of university content during the pandemic, I can empathise with the stress that comes with feeling as though you`ll never be able to master what you need to know in time for your exams! But that`s where I come in. I`m here to help you with anything you may be worried about in terms of English, which may include (but are not limited to):

- Getting into your GCSE texts (themes, symbolism, the language used)
- Revising texts for your final exams/getting a revision schedule sorted (GCSE & A Level)
- Getting a head start on GCSE texts for Year 9s
- Getting a head start on A Level texts for Year 11s
- University applications for Second Year college students

Together, we`ll get you through the hard, scary parts whilst also building your confidence in not only answering exam questions, but also in yourself!

I do set basic homework to do in between sessions which normally includes looking at an exam question and writing down the steps of how you would go about answering it, creating plans for exam answers, as well as writing up practice answers (for Year 11 mainly). This is not to add to your workload from school, there won`t be any consequences if you are unable to complete the tasks I set - it is just so we can use our session time to focus on specific areas of need!

I am always open to feedback from students, and parents of students, as I am aware that learning isn`t linear and every student learns differently.

Experience: My experience consists of real classroom-based teaching due to my time as a trainee teacher in English at secondary school level. As a result of this, I am experienced with the AQA mark scheme which means I can help students learn what examiners look for, as well as give them tailored advice based on the experience I have. I also have experience in dealing with students of all abilities, and am able to make sure each lesson is targeted in an accessible way that can also help improve the student`s understanding in the subject.

My degree in English Literature means I am able to teach students how to successfully analyse texts, as well as how to approach unseen texts (a skill needed for their GCSE English Language Paper 2). Furthermore, if you`re an A Level student looking for tutoring, I am able to teach more difficult skills such as, using theory and context in order to elevate analysis, as well as how to research effectively when completing coursework.
