Information about Jonathan

I attended the King`s School Canterbury in Kent before going on to study English Literature at Edinburgh University. I subsequently worked as a professional writer for various online and print publications, including Time Out magazine. I also wrote comedy for the BBC, contributing to various radio productions on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Scotland.

I am a primary school teacher (currently Year 6) and have worked as an English tutor for over 10 years. I am also the Head of English at Charlton Manor Primary School, which means I am responsible for all aspects of phonics, speaking and listening, reading and writing across the school. I believe that every child has the potential to succeed in English, and am on a lifelong quest to get as many children to enjoy reading as possible.

Availability: During term time, I am available to tutor early in the evening on weekdays (around 6pm or 6.30pm). I also have limited availability on Saturdays. During the holidays, I can be very flexible.

Willing to travel: 2 miles

Experience: I started tutoring in 2008, and have predominantly tutored students for GCSE English Language and Literature exams since then. I enjoyed tutoring so much that I eventually decided to become a teacher, completing my training in 2016 through the Surrey South Farnham SCITT programme. While I trained in Years 1, 2 and 3, since qualifying I have taught exclusively in Year 5 (2 years) and Year 6 (2 years). Accordingly, I have worked with children from age 5 to age 18, and have an excellent understanding of the teaching of English across all key stages and year groups. I have also worked with special needs children, gifted and talented children, children in care, children with behavioural difficulties and children who both love and hate English. Whoever I teach or tutor, I always adapt my teaching to the child`s needs to ensure that I can help them reach their full potential. I am happy to teach both online and in person, as long as the travel distance is reasonable.
