Information about Gwilym
After studying Physics and Mathematics at A-level, I got accepted on a Civil Engineering degree course at Cardiff University. After graduating, I worked for a small firm of Consulting Engineers. In order to gain site experience to enable me to apply for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers, I worked for a Contractor for a year. I became a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in June 1981, and thereby qualified as a Chartered Engineer. Although I am now a retired member of the Institution, I am still recognized as a Chartered Engineer.
After finishing my site work, I worked for another consultant, as a member of the Resident Engineer`s staff on two land reclamation contracts. My next post was with Welsh Water, first on land drainage projects, and then on water supply schemes, before transferring to the Operations Department. After ten years with Welsh Water, I went to work for the local authority, initially, on land reclamation schemes and then on infrastructure and building projects. Most of these projects were funded by grants from the Welsh Development Agency and Europe.
I was employed by the local authority for over twenty four years until my retirement in 2013.
Availability: Any time during the day or evening Monday to Friday.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: Although my degree and subsequent work experience has been in the field of civil engineering, my keen interest in mathematics has stayed with me since my schooldays.
I have tutored students on a one to one basis in Mathematics since graduating in 1973, just occasionally for a number of years, but on a regular basis since 2006, mainly with GCSE students From August 2003 to July 2009, I was a member of an Extra Curricula Maths franchise, based in Caernarfon, offering tuition to students from the age of six up to sixteen. When the franchise ended in 2009, I took on the few remaining students as a private tutor, which I have ever since, up to AS level, but mainly GCSE students.
For a short period I also tutored nursing students who, having not gained a pass grade at GCSE level, were required to pass a numeracy examination in their first year of study. After the first student nurse I tutored was successful in her examination, she passed my details to another student, and this word of mouth process resulted in other students seeking my assistance.
Many of the school students which I have tutored have also resulted from recommendations by parents of previous students. This occurred regularly when I was working for the local authority, where members of staff asked colleagues about Mathematics tuition for their child. On a few occasions,, having tutored one child, I have been asked to tutor their siblings.

Initial contact was very good - unfortunately did not commence tutoring due to Covid-19 and my son no longer needing to sit his GCSE exams.

Gwilym has been tutoring my son, Maths, for about 2 months. My son who is 11 years old finds Gwilym approachable and friendly. Although at first my son was against the idea of tutoring he now tells me how Gwilym is helping him with equations that he struggles with in his school class. Gwilym has shown a high class of professionalism whenever we have communicated by always replying promptly to my messages and being punctual for tutoring lessons. I would recommend Gwilym to others.
