Information about Gemma
I completed a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Manchester, and am working as a Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Associate) in Chemistry at the university. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2015 with a first class Master`s degree in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry (MSci). I am friendly, approachable and find teaching very rewarding.
I have six years experience tutoring numerous levels of science subjects from GCSE chemistry to final year degree level Chemistry. With regards to tutoring school children specifically, my strengths are that I am very approachable and like to build a good rapport with my students so that they are comfortable asking questions that they may not want to ask their teachers. This is crucial in order to create a environment where they do not feel judged or silly for not understanding a concept.
I have a recent clear enhanced DBS check through the University of Manchester.
Availability: Weekday evenings and weekends.
I am available to tutor Chemistry and Biochemistry from GCSE to degree level, Biology and Physics up to GCSE.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have 6 years tutoring experience with students of various abilities and ages, from science GCSE up to degree level chemistry. All my previous students have met or exceeded their targets and I am able to provide many further references on request (as I previously worked through an agency).
Within the University of Manchester, I am a demonstrator and graduate teaching assistant. This involves a lot of one-on-one tuition of theory as well as practical work, and also the responsibility of marking reports and examining the students` knowledge. I help run Outreach workshops at secondary school targeted at GCSE and A Level Chemistry students with particular focus on teaching NMR and IR for their exams. I have run HeadStart Chemistry residential summer schools for A level students looking to study Chemistry at university.
Previously I have worked in Turkey as an Au Pair and English/Maths teacher for a 9 year old girl so I have experience working with children who are not native English speakers.
