Information about Lars

Students tell me I am a good teacher. Most students are surprised how quickly the session flew past and that I managed to bring back the fun.

Testimonials say a lot - have a look at what people think about me.

I have been a qualified teacher since 2005, working at local mainstream schools Varndean and PACA. Since 2017 I am working at a small independent college where I found my joy in teaching again - and try to share that with my tutees.

`But why do we need maths? I`m never going to use it.`

Maths is a bit like doing sports and being physically active when you’re young. Most people can agree that being fit is a good thing. Very few people make sports into their profession and earn money with it. Does that invalidate the usefulness of being fit in your teens? Or later? Of course not!

It is clear that MOST people do not need the maths that is taught in school and sixth forms. However, Maths (and to some extent Physics) teaches you abstract thinking, problem solving - things that most of us definitely need in our lives. A lot of our world is now abstract by default - just look at your mobile phone. The professional world is abstract. Maths will train your brain to think in an abstract way. That`s why maths is important. It keeps your brain fit.

Our mainstream schooling system is now almost entirely focussed on our kids passing GCSE exams. Of course exams are important - they serve as an entry ticket for new opportunities. Maths and English are entry requirements for almost every further course, but trying to pass exams doesn`t always help to build a love of learning.

Past tutees say that I was able to give them back confidence so they could pass and excel in their exams AND benefit from maths and science with fun learning.

For the last two years I have mainly done online tutoring (the college I am working at went 100% online in the first week of the spring lockdown - I was one of the tutors setting up the system) with great success.

During a tutoring session I am using a large graphic pad for writing and drawing on a second screen, i.e providing an interactive whiteboard. This interactive whiteboard is shared online with the student(s) so we both can see, discuss and work on the content. If other resources are needed, e.g. browser window, a different screen is shared. After the session the whiteboard sheets will be emailed to parents so tutees can recap and revisit if wanted/needed.

Interestingly some students prefer to work that way; it seems to suit their way of learning. I am also happy for students to switch their camera off so they can concentrate better on what is on the screen and the content. As long as there is an audio connection, we are good to go.

Availability: Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, Friday afternoon, some evenings and of course emergency sessions at the weekend, if needed.

Willing to travel: 2 miles

Experience: Experienced Secondary school and Sixth form teacher for Physics and Maths.

Experienced tutor now in the 8th year running, with a proven track record of getting students through GCSE and universities, incl. Oxford and Cambridge.

I cover all of A-level physics, but prefer to only teach mechanics in A-level Maths as I am a physicist by trade and think there are tutors out there who can do/teach pure maths better than me.

I can tutor Biology and Chemistry up to KS3 incl., but it is not really my speciality.

My son has only had a few lessons with Lars for A level physics so it’s hard to review without any test results but my son is definitely feeling more confident with physics. Lars is friendly, easy to talk to, reliable and very prompt with lesson notes. We will certainly continue engaging with Lars.

Lars is an experienced teacher and brings a wealth of knowledge, as well as a warm and engaging way of relating to my child, who really enjoys their sessions together. The conversation is pretty free-flowing and Lars is really good at following an idea and developing curiosity, rather than simply `sticking to the scri pt.`
