Information about Jessica

I am a hardworking individual that wants to become a primary school teacher. I have just recently completed my foundation degree in Education which has given a level 5 equivalent in Childcare and I am currently at university completing a BA Honour degree in Primary Education (Level 6 Childcare equivalent). Which I feel provides a strong basis of knowledge and understanding that I can bring to my everyday practice. I will then be going forth to complete a Post-graduate Certificate in Primary Education that will give me the opportunity to become a primary school teacher. Studying at university, whilst working at a school gives me a great advantage in comparison to my other teaching assistant colleagues, as I am constantly aware of the everchanging world of education. I can also incorporate what I learn at university with my teaching’s at school. I have the opportunity to plan lessons, strengthen my marking skills and even lead an entire class.

I enjoy working with children and supporting them on a daily basis. I have a real passion for teaching children and encouraging their development in learning. I have worked with a range of children with different abilities and have the confidence to be able to adapt my teaching style to suit their individual learning needs.

Experience: I am an enthusiastic teaching assistant in the process of becoming a qualified primary school teacher. I have worked in Early Years for two years and have extensive knowledge of the Early Years Statutory Framework. I now work in an independent school where I support children between the ages of 8-11 with English and Mathematics - becoming more knowledgeable with the national curriculum every day. I am also Level 3 trained in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), where I was head SENco (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) at my previous preschool. I supported children with severe learning difficulties; planning individual activities, writing educational plans with tailored targets and liaising with parents and professionals. I was also fortunate to be involved with writing two Educational Health Care Plans (EHCPs) that would prepare them for primary school. I am passionate about working with and supporting children every day, finding it an extremely rewarding job!

Whilst working in a preschool I prepared children for the early stages of school, for example, I focused on teaching them the first six phonics that will be taught in reception. I would also support children with pencil control (at 36 months) and by the end of preschool, the children would be able to independently write their own names. I also focused on name and number recognition, going up to the number 20. When it came to supporting children with SEND it was important that I tailored the activities to suit their individual learning needs. With any child, it is important to understand that they learn at different rates to other children and enjoy different styles of learning, so it was always important to find the correct balance to make the teaching worthwhile and purposeful.

Throughout my routine in school I focus on supporting children with their reading, ensuring that they are competent in sounding out words and developing a level of expression (depending on their age). During an English lesson, I encourage children to have a level of independence with their writing, for example; by offering support with a whiteboard that can be used for spellings and sentence structure. This technique offers children guidance as well as allowing them to think for themselves.

I am also level 1 paediatric first response trained (12hr course) as well as level 1 safeguarding trained. Over the three years of working in education, I have a good understanding of safeguarding and am up-to-date with policies and regulations.
