BACKGROUND

I am a private Maths & Physics tutor based in Glasgow. I will be starting a joint degree in Maths & Physics in September and am fully qualified to teach the subjects I tutor, having achieved grades A*AA in my Maths, Further Maths and Physics A-levels (equivalent to Advanced Highers), as well as a gold certificate in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge and a bronze medal in round 1 of the British Maths Olympiad, meaning I placed in the top 100 of high school mathematicians in the UK. I also have a Distinction in AEA Maths.

I have both an enhanced DBS certificate (England) and a PVG scheme membership (Scotland) for working with children, which are available upon request.

TUTORING EXPERIENCE

I have accumulated over 230 hours of tutoring experience since starting out in February, teaching the English and Scottish curricula from primary level all the way up to A-levels/Advanced Highers.

I have experience teaching students from all across the board, from dyslexics and dyscalculics to top achieving students. For example, one dyslexic student decided to pursue Maths at Higher level after we slowly worked together on a few topics before their National 5 exam and they realised they could actually understand Maths, unlike at school where they were constantly getting left behind.

Given my strong problem solving background in Maths competitions, I am also able to keep the most advanced students interested in the subject by working with them on challenging problems as opposed to the standard “bookwork” exercises they get at school.

TUTORING APPROACH

I generally tutor by asking lots of questions throughout each lesson. I use questions when I first meet a student to find out where they are at and what they seek to get out of the tutoring. I then use questions throughout the following lessons to constantly assess whether they understand what we are learning, and if not then exactly which aspects of the topic they struggle with. For example, by asking one student to explain why they used Pythagoras’s theorem on a problem, I realised that they did not know it only applied to right-angled triangles.

Since Maths & Physics are based first and foremost on the ability to reason soundly from one point to the next until the desired conclusion is reached, there should be no guesswork or vagueness involved in the student’s reasoning process, and this is what questioning allows me to detect and then remedy.

I also strive to make my approach as flexible as possible by constantly adapting to the needs of each student, from offering explanations based on the method that they themselves attempted to use (rather than the method I would use myself on the same problem), to (for example) specifically obtaining a problem book for one student who preferred to learn through problems rather than the usual textbook format of theory followed by exercises.

By tailoring my approach in this way to each student, I ensure that the process of learning Maths & Physics is made as easy, familiar and enjoyable as possible.

PRICING & OTHER

I charge £25/hr with the first lesson being free. I mainly tutor online and near Ruchill, however I am happy to travel for longer sessions or group tutoring opportunities. Discounts are available on these as well as on block bookings.
