Information about Eleanor
I first trained as an evolutionary biologist/palaeontologist and went on to lecture and research at the University of Cambridge, University College London and the Natural History Museum, London. My passion to pursue fascinating scientific questions has led me to field expeditions in Africa and to authoring publications in leading scientific journals.
More recently, having relocated to Worcestershire with my family, I undertook a PGCE and taught science at my local secondary school. My life experience and strong subject knowledge, coupled with teaching the national curriculum in schools, has enabled me to encourage students to explore and broaden their perspectives and show them what they can achieve.
I have spent half my life exploring the natural world and I will bring this experience, enthusiasm and passionate commitment for the subject to my tutorials. As a palaeontologist at the Natural History Museum I designed and delivered content for Nature Live events, which involved interacting with many young people and kindling in them a love of science.
My philosophy in teaching is to provide a caring, stimulating and challenging environment so students can grow in confidence at their own pace. I aim to communicate concepts in a straightforward way and show how they can be applied to the real world.
Availability: Currently available during week days and evenings. Weekend tutorials can be arranged if necessary. I can offer online lessons via Skype or Zoom.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: As a secondary school science teacher I have taught KS3 and GCSE, combined science, biology, physics and chemistry at foundation and higher level. I have delivered science lessons to students of all abilities and have experience of improving low ability students through using the right kind of scaffolding and careful preparation of resources. Equally, I have seen how some of the most able pupils need to be stretched beyond the syllabus to satiate their ambitious pursuit of knowledge and achieve their fullest potential.
I am familiar with AQA and Edexcel exam boards and have been recruited as an AQA examiner. During tutorials I will use exam questions to highlight the skills and knowledge needed to attain the grades that reflect each student’s potential.
In addition to the usual curriculum, I am planning bespoke KS3 and GCSE catchup lessons for the time missed by students during lockdown. The aim is to tailor these catch-up tutorials to individual needs and provide students with the strong foundational knowledge that they will need for pursuing their next steps, whether it be GCSEs, A levels or higher education

Eleanor is a wonderful teacher who has enabled my 15 year old son to find motivation and enthusiasm for learning science after a year in lockdown. We initially planned to only have several lessons to tackle the most challenging parts of the curriculum, but the lessons were so successful we have now booked them weekly until the end of the year. Eleanor`s impressive breadth of knowledge and experience, professional approach to teaching, and her caring nature make her a wonderful tutor.
