Information about Charlie
I graduated from Oxford University with a 1st in Maths, obtaining a 1st in each year and prizes for the highest mark in my college (Keble College) in each year. I have a genuine passion for maths as it is fairly unique in being the only study which, rather than relying on facts, relies solely on your own thinking ability. What`s more, maths is not just a purely formulaic pursuit, it really is an art! Even if you do not intend to pursue the subject itself further, the skills associated with and developed by maths are relevant to all parts of life That`s why I think it is really important to be taught properly.
As Maths A Level tends to throw a lot of concepts at you without giving any explanation as to where they came from, my approach is to build your understanding by explaining the underlying theory. Thus you can actually apply logic to solve problems rather than relying on rote learning and memorisation. In particular, this means that you can tackle, with confidence, the unfamiliar questions that are invariably thrown in to exams to catch you out. It also significantly reduces the effort involved in revising, as it is far more difficult to mechanically memorise all the formulae and concepts than it is to simply understand the ideas from which they are derived and apply them.
The syllabi for Maths and Further Maths have recently changed to introduce much more complex material which would usually be seen at university level. One of my strengths is teaching these more demanding topics. Therefore, if you are looking to study any maths-related subjects at university, I am particularly well placed to help you build a solid foundation for your further studies and for any entrance exams.
I am flexible and will also work with you to identify areas where you need support and to build up your skills.
I am also happy to help outside of organised sessions by email or phone if you need help with homework or other queries.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I offer tuition in Maths and Further Maths A Level; I have coached my younger sisters and friends of theirs who struggled with Maths to achieve top grades. I have spent time doing work experience in a school where I was able to offer after school classes giving extra help for students who were looking to apply to Oxbridge. Due to the college family system within Oxford, I was able to help with mentoring younger undergraduates throughout my degree.
Feedback For Charlie (2)
He is an excellent tutor. Our son is enjoying the tutorials so much that he can not wait for the next one.
Charlie is doing a fantastic job teaching my son. He is very approachable, and has the ability to explain complicated equations. We are very pleased with the work taking place and plan to retain Charlie for the forseable future. We would strongly recommend him to other students.
