Jaana

Hi!

My name is Jaana and I`m originally from Finland, where I studied for my IB Diploma. I moved to London 10 years ago, where I did my BSc in Molecular Genetics at King`s College London. During my undergrad I also did a year in industry, working in a lab studying cancer genetics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. I then completed my Wellcome Trust -funded Masters by Research in Biochemistry (specializing in cancer genetics) at the University of Bristol. I currently work for the NHS in Cancer Services.

Over the years I have gained a lot of research experience internationally, studying DNA mutations in zebrafish, neuroscience in fruit flies, cancer genetics in mice, biophysics in personalised medicine, and bioinformatics in human cancer cells. I am also passionate about writing, and my EE in IB HL Bio received a prize from the Academy of Finland, and my final year dissertation at King`s won 2nd prize out of 350+ students. I`m most interested in inter-disciplinary research and how advances in science can transform patient care in the clinic.

Over the past 5 years I have worked for the University of Bristol in various teaching roles (more about that later), as well as the student mental health services. I take a person-centered approach to meet the students where they are, and I feel that helping students manage and cope with their stress and anxiety in the face of academic pressures is an important part of supporting students` wellbeing and success.

I`m fluent in English, Russian and Finnish. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and baking, studying psychology and Japanese, as well as spending time with friends and family and going on long walks in nature with my 5-year old Pomeranian dog Misha.

Availability: I am available on weeknights from 4PM - 10PM, and on weekends between 10AM - 10PM.

Experience: I have 10 years of experience in tutoring biology with IB, A-level and Undergraduate Students (biomedical sciences, medics, vets). I have been a private tutor, as well as worked for various tutoring agencies. I was also employed by the University of Bristol to work in various teaching roles, such as demonstrating laboratory practicals, tutoring workshops, leading reading groups and journal clubs, as well as assisting students with special education needs and mental health concerns over the examination periods. I have also enjoyed taking part in public outreach activities, such as "Women in Science" for GCSE students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In addition to course material, I can help with exam prep, planning experiments and writing lab reports, helping students gain research experience, proofreading essays/reports, going through scientific papers, personal statements, etc.
