Experience: Supporting Statement

Trained as an English teacher at UCL in 2020, I have had the benefit of teaching English as well as Citizenship, Religious Studies and History. I have taught in coeducational schools and I have taught every year group, including year 13, throughout the two terms. I have worked closely with students aiming to take their GCSEs, helping them prepare as well as marking their assessments and delivering feedback. Having a very strong idea of the GCSE mark scheme, after marking thousands of papers, has enabled me to help individual students focus their approach to difficult English texts.

My BA Honours degree and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) have given me a broad perspective and knowledge which have naturally supported my teaching and helped make lessons both more relevant and more engaging. I maintain a strong interest in politics, religion, current news and history, all of which I try to inject into lessons to make them more stimulating and enjoyable.

With over 20 years of experience in the world of technology, I have been able to help students adapt to the increasing digital components of learning and taken many lessons online via Teams and Zoom myself.

I believe my broad life knowledge and experience of 25 years in the workplace can help me make the content of the curriculum more relevant to each student. At Ashcroft, which is an Outstanding school according to OFSTED, I have consistently focused on engaging with children where their own needs lie and building positively upon their individual, existing capabilities, celebrating what they can do and developing their communication skills.

The importance of communication skills, in the world of work, has driven my own primary motivation; to enable each child to have as many options open to them as possible, once they leave school. Many years of presenting in front of customers and audiences, years supporting and training users, has enabled me to develop the self-assurance required to stand and speak, debate and interact confidently; skills which I hope to nurture in students. I have also engaged in some acting roles over the years, most recently in Private Lives, and I hope to share that love of performance by bringing the curriculum to life in the classroom.

As a parent of teenagers myself, I understand the need to avoid communicating in a remote or detached way and aspire to not only make lessons relevant and engaging but also utilise discourse and humour in the classroom too. My experience has helped me embed an approach to discipline where boundaries are clear, which is authoritative and yet still good humoured and approachable. I enjoy the company of teenagers, their energy and ideas.

As a resident of South London for 25 years I know the area very well and I feel invested in the success of young people within it.
