English teacher at Rhymney Comprehensive School, 1983- 2016 (early retirement).
1985-2016 Second in English Department/Leader of Learning for Key Stage 3, with specific roles as follows:
Responsibility for Key Stage 2-3 transition;
Key Stage 3 Assessment/delivery of curriculum;
Responsibility for developing revision materials for GCSE English Language and Literature (previous and current specifications);
Departmental Mentor for ITT students/NQTs;
Responsibility for assessment of GCSE Speaking and Listening
Also:
1998-2000: Head of Year 10-11;
2000-2016: Head of Sixth form.
I taught English and English Literature at Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS and A Levels for thirty three years; my first A Level and GCSE classes being taught as long ago as 1985. I was made second in department after two years at the school in recognition of my practice and promise. With the onset of the then new GCSE examinations, I was entrusted with the top set after two years of excellent results in the old CSE English examination.
Throughout my career I had a reputation for excellence in terms of stimulating pupils to achieve the very best results of which they were capable. When observed teaching, I invariably received an Excellent for both teaching and learning. When observed by EAS during a whole school review in 2010, I was one of two teachers in the whole school to be deemed an `outstanding` practitioner, as measured by EAS against, not only teachers within my school, but across all teachers in the county.
WJEC roles and responsibilities:
1995- 2008: Key Stage 3 English SATs Examiner;
1987- present: WJEC GCSE examiner;
2004- 2016: WJEC GCSE in Wales Team Leader, Units 1 and 2, Foundation Tier, as well as, initially, an examiner for the original single tier GCSE;
2017- present: WJEC Team Leader, Units 2 and 3;
2016-present: Eduqas English Literature Unit 1 Examiner;
Certificate of Education marker for five years in the late nineties;
2000-2016: GCSE English Language and Literature Coursework moderator ;
Circa 2007-2008: Assistant Chief Examiner, Functional Skills, which involved developing materials for what was then a new examination and delivering INSET to teachers in London and Manchester. I resigned after having a TIA but continued to mark the paper for three more years. I am now in very rude health!
Other responsibilities/experience:
1985 -1986: O Level English Evening Class at Rhymney Adult Education Centre (on the school premises);
I have tutored privately on an ad hoc basis at different times during my career (GCSE/A Level).
My role as an examiner/team leader with WJEC has given me unique insight into the strategies needed to approach questions on Units 2 and 3 of the new English Language specifications, as well as assisting me with tailoring resources targeted specifically on what candidates need to do to cover the relevant ground needed to do well. My knowledge and understanding of the mark schemes for both units (I am involved every year in refining them in Team Leader meetings at WJEC) also serve me well in terms of being able to show candidates how they can ascend the assessment bands for each question. I have written many resources already to assist with this in my last year of teaching and, latterly, to help me with the private tuition of individuals.
