Information about Ritu

I have just graduated as a Master`s biologist in evolutionary and molecular biology at Imperial College London (2020 World No.9, QS World University Rankings) and am embarking on my new career as a research scientist. I was actually a late starter to science and went to art school for my first degree but I always wanted to be a marine biologist, so after working in music publicity for a long time I returned to my scientific ambitions. In 2014 I enrolled on a remote learning undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences through the OU. I have just now completed my Master`s degree and hope to start my PhD in 2021, researching the ecology of marine invertebrates. Whilst completing my Bachelor`s, and for a year prior to my MSc, I interned in the Natural History Museum London, as an assistant to curators in the Mammals and Mollusca (octopus and squid) sections of the museum. I live in North London with my two sons (aged 11 and 13) and our dog.

Experience: I tutored both my sons full time across 2 curricula during lock down, completed my own Master`s final exams and thesis, and simultaneously offered tuition to one student through their mock A-level (AQA) biology exam, also during lock down.
As a full time Master`s student I have a lot of recent experience in sitting exams to best effect and believe my recent experiences really help when it comes to tutoring - I understand very well what my students are going through.
Additionally, as my undergraduate degree was through distance learning, and the final term of my Master’s was completed in lock down I am very familiar with online learning and how to negotiate it to best effect.
My approach is curriculum based, ensuring my students have a firm grip on the themes and topics that will be in their exams by exploring and unpacking ideas together. I think it`s important that ideas come off the page into real life and often use multimedia tools such as animations, film sequences and documentaries to help expand the ideas students are struggling with.
Additionally, I have a great deal of practical experience in science communication gained in my time working in the Natural History Museum collections, where I was often public facing and frequently contributed to presentations on the giant squid and other marine life housed in my section of the museum. This involved translating often complex theory and nuanced ideas to a non-scientific audience and making it fun and interesting.
This broad range of interactions while imparting scientific knowledge, means I feel very confident in helping young minds absorb theory in a way that makes it relatable. I have a lot of recent experience both personal and for others, in exam preparation and am practiced at revision techniques and approaching exams with confidence.
I think two-way conversation in tutoring sessions is very important as it is this mutual exploration of key ideas that firmly embeds understanding and helps instill a joy for the subject. My biography means that I really understand the understand the importance of encouraging and nurturing ambitions, I recognise my story in an unusual one and that each student has specific individual needs and that everyone has the propensity to achieve their best if given the opportunity.
