Information about Michael

I spent twenty years working for builders merchants before going to university in my late thirties. I achieved a degree in Sports Journalism, illustrating my excellent communication skills, and then trained to teach Maths at Nottingham Trent University. I have spent the last seven years teaching in secondary school in Burton upon Trent. I believe my experience in the ‘real’ world before going into teaching gives me a greater understanding of the needs of students, and makes me a more rounded teacher and person. I have always been a keen sports person having competed for Great Britain as a schoolboy wrestler and the experience of juggling school with training commitments gives me an understanding of the pressures students feel, particularly in the build up to their GCSE. The fact it took me 20 years of hard work to get to university means I can relate to pupils who may not be achieving their full potential and advise them from personal experience of the advantages of getting the best grades possible from their opportunity in school.

Availability: I am available Weekday evenings from 6 till 9 and Saturday mornings 9 till 12.

Experience: I am a qualified Maths teacher with 7 years experience of teaching GCSE maths to great success. I have achieved record results in my school for set 3 students, with the majority achieving Grade A and B in the old GCSE gradings. I believe in trying to make the subject engaging and entertaining and looking for real life and relative explanations of concepts to aid understanding. I believe one of my strengths as a teacher is the ability to build relationships and make students comfortable in their learning. I am also a firm believer in adapting my teaching to suit the learner rather than expecting learners to adapt to a particular teaching style.
