Information about Matthew
I`m a Physics PhD student at CERN, working on optical fibre sensing and particle physics analysis. My research group recently received the 2025 Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics.
I`m enthusiastic and passionate but also efficient and observant. My job is to know Physics and Maths inside out and I really enjoy teaching. I also have a lot of experience in programming and data analysis.
I like to focus directly on helping students with problems or areas that they are currently struggling with. I can also advise on exam technique. Finally, the most successful students are ones who really enjoy the subjects so at the end of each lesson I explain a fascinating topic in Science, Philosophy or just the world in general to try to inspire them.
I think everyone is born equal and that all you need to do well at something is to really want to do well at it.
I read a lot, play football and do small coding projects in my free time. In 2015 I raised £3000 for charity as part of a challenge to climb Kilimanjaro in Africa.
Availability: I live in London and the best times for me are evenings and weekends. However, my work is fully remote and I`m quite flexible.
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: I have extensive experience of one-to-one tutoring with students from the ages 12-18 in Maths, Physics and Chemistry (KS3, GCSE and A Level). Part of my PhD role is also to train younger students in physics and software.
In September 2015 I was part of the Beamline for Schools project in the CERN research centre in Switzerland, helping teach students physics and programming to train them for a particle physics experiment.
