Information about Richard

I have been a successful teacher and personal tutor in Physics and Chemistry for many years. I moved to Plymouth about 10 years ago, and really enjoy life down here. I have always enjoyed science, my particular interests currently involves the wonders of the stars. I also get great pleasure from music and sport.

Education has been my real passion over the years. It remains a genuine pleasure to help learners of all ages and levels to acquire understanding, and also for examination candidates (e.g. in A-levels) to acquire the necessary technique to gain the grades for university courses.

The Covid pandemic has caused major disruption to school and college teaching last year. There will inevitably be gaps in the meaningful understanding of many subjects in the curriculum; this is particularly unfortunate for challenging subjects like Physics and Chemistry. A personal tutor can be really important for learners that are in this position. I am happy in the first instance to consider more of a negotiated hourly tuition rate in the light of the present economic and unprecedented situation.

Availability: Evenings and weekends are best. I am also available during the daytime on Monday- Friday.

To complete teaching of courses last academic year, I used a range of internet platforms (Zoom, FaceTime, Classroom). Although I believe that face to face tuition is the most effective method of support, such platforms could be very useful if the pandemic causes further disruption. Sessions using this method of support could be conducted almost anytime and at a rate which can be negotiated.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: I have been teaching Chemistry and Physics for many years in schools and colleges.. I have acquired a very good success record in both A-level Physics and Chemistry over the years. I also have acquired much experience in other courses such as Access, GCSE and BTECs and more recently supporting students in their Foundation Degree studies (Chemistry and Physics). I am currently a Science Moderator for a national examination board, and an examination marker for another. I have been tutoring for about ten years in the Plymouth area. Although most tutees are studying for A-levels, others have been studying for GCSE, Access to H.E., GAMSAT and also students at university (degree in Chemistry). I really enjoy this aspect of my science teaching, and know how much one to one tuition improves understanding, confidence and finally examination grades.
