Information about Mara

My first step to successful teaching is to built up a personal connection to each students that ideally surpasses just teaching a lesson or helping with homework.
I tend to relate my classes and private teaching lessons to topics that have a personal relevance to the student and which reflects their interests. It is my job to empower each pupil to grow in devotion, confidence and competence in the subject matter and place their learning successes towards their personal aspirations. By designing innovative hands-on practical approaches for the individual, I create a context that makes each topic relevant and exciting to study.
I’m a patient, caring, outgoing and as required a rigorous tutor, with a great ability to motivate pupils through praise and encouragement. My biggest joy is following the progress a student makes through the targeted process that the one-to-one tutoring provides.

I hold a MA degree in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art (2014), London and a BA in Cultural Studies from Leuphana University (2013), Germany.
My passion for teaching started during my high school years in Karlsruhe, Germany where I delivered private tutoring lessons in German to students in the age range of 10-17 years. I have a passion for German literature and all the particularities of German language. Teaching is my way to share this fascination. In the teaching environment, my aim is to transform my passion into inspiration allowing my students to develop a love for learning my native language.
During my German BA in Cultural Studies, I taught individuals and groups of up to 20 BA students in Art History and Cultural theory as well as basic research and writing skills. I was also part of a mentor scheme for exchange students where I taught German as a foreign language. I particularly enjoy preparing stimulating teaching units that are tailored to the specific needs of my students. It is rewarding to share my knowledge in my areas of expertise (German, Art History, Philosophy and Cultural Theory) as well as my work experience that I have gained through internships and jobs in museums, galleries and the cultural/academic field around the world.

I’m currently undertaking a PhD in Art History focussing on contemporary art and work as a curatorial assistant to Stephanie R, chief curator at the Hayward Gallery. In my free time, I take advantage of London’s cultural and artistic offerings. I’m an advocate of the Royal Opera and frequently visit artist studios, galleries, museums and concerts. Last year I founded a trans-disciplinary reading group that consists of young artists, curators and scholars which meets on a monthly basis. I’m also a member of the ‘Mixed Up Chorus’ in Camden which is an intercultural and intergenerational 80-voice choir uniting members and audiences through a love of music with regular performances. We have a global repertoire with exciting collaborations, engaging local artists. Besides singing, I enjoy reading, writing for a German art magazine, cooking, cycling, practising yoga and playing drums.

Experience: 1. German as a Foreign Language
German as a foreign language, Private Lesson: classes designed for visiting exchange students and structured around conversations. These took place in public places where language is essential to interact in the given context. The classes where supported by material allowing preparation of vocabulary and grammar. Within the course of a year and based on weekly meetings, we improved the language level from A1 up to B1.

2. German for students aged between 11-17 years.
German for native speakers, Private Lessons: Prepared students for a-level exams, supported student’s homework demands and worked on individual deficits including grammar, spelling and text structure ,all through individually designed material. In the course of a year we improved the student’s results by 2 grades.

3. Art History/ Cultural Theory for BA students
Seminars with 20 BA students: courses took place in an academic setting and where designed for first year students. Based on material provided by the university, I designed stimulating teaching units based on group activities. This allowed people to learn presentation techniques, work structure and time management. Assigned homework related to topics in the field of art and cultural theory was intended to improve writing skills. Individual feedback was provided after each assignment and received the highest rating possible by the students. I continued to act as mentor after the course completion.
