Information about Mick
I grew up in the South of England and floated through the education system until I graduated with a BSc in Genetics from Nottingham University. I snubbed the prospect of joining the rat-race to choose travelling instead, and 18 years and 88 countries later I have started to teach.
I studied Genetics with the intention of curing diseases and building a career in biomedical research but, although I found the course fascinating, I wanted to gain some experience in the real world, so I hit the road. Over the years I have worked as a courier in New York, a barman, a data analyst, a lab assistant in a cancer research lab, a painter/decorator in Norway, a scuba diver in Honduras, an activity holiday consultant in France and Spain and many more.
In 2013 I self-published the book, wrote short stories for magazines, I started making films and formed the Modern Explorers with some friends I met travelling. I have been written about in various newspapers, countless websites, interviewed on radio stations in Ireland, Holland, Dubai and England and I even appeared on TV in Australia. Due to the films I made for my youtube channel I was asked to film a pilot for the Science Channel at the end of 2019. I was working as a science teacher when Covid shocked the world and now I have chosen to start giving tuition to pupils as I find the one to one style of teaching far more enjoyable than the crowd-control style of teaching required in classrooms.
I believe my experiences on the road, when combined with my science knowledge, will help me make science interesting to my pupils, encourage them to want to study and use scientific methods in their learning. Travel stories can demonstrate how I am highly organised, a good leader, a good communicator, as well as listener. I have experienced various cultures and beliefs, met a variety of interesting characters and communicated without language, all requiring an abundance of patience and a sense of humour. I am flexible, adaptable and dealing with diabetes means I am in a position to help others overcome hurdles to realise their ambitions, and due to my condition I lead a healthy lifestyle and I am environmentally conscious.
