Information about Graeme

I`ve just retired from being a professor of maths and cs at an Ivy League university (Cornell) in the US and have returned to home territory, and am happy to continue to teach and tutor, particularly in maths (specialised in topology, analysis and algebra) and computer science. I`ve been teaching at the university level for 40 years, yet have taught hundreds of school-age children over the years. Although now retired, I enjoy teaching far too much to give it up completely!

I grew up in London and dd my degrees and early academic appointments in Birmingham, London and Paris, before moving to the US.

Availability: Very flexible __ I`m happy to offer the first hour at half the usual rate to accommodate the expense of the TH fee.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: I have decades of experience teaching, mostly students of university age, but over the years have taught hundreds of school-age students. These latter have either been seeking an enhanced level of knowledge and understanding, or have been in need of a highly flexible approach to getting them over hurdles in their ability to grasp the subject. Students vary greatly in their native ways of thinking, so in this latter category I specialise in finding creative ways of explaining things tuned particularly to a given student`s thinking patterns. I`ve found that once a student has found a way of `seeing` a class of problems, their confidence starts to soar and they`re able to build on that in tackling other areas.

What I enjoy most is getting students to understand the underlying principles, since that allows them to develop self-confidence and comfort in knowing that if a question is posed in a non-formulaic manner, they can still make sense of it and attack it successfully. I`m happy to work with all ages of student, and have plenty of experience doing so :)

I found this tutor to be very engaging with my son and very pleasant to work with. I particularly liked the way in which he made Maths so accessible and enjoyable to my son, and that he managed to take away the feeling of fear or anxiety so often associated with this subject. I thoroughly recommend him.
