Information about Jack

I am a 25 year-old working as a risk consultant in the insurance industry. I grew up loving the outdoors, fortunate enough to spend time in the mountains both in the UK (Scotland, Wales, Lakes) and overseas (Kenya, Ecuador, Switzerland, Nepal). As a result, I am passionate about my specialist subject, Geography; there is nothing I enjoy more than sharing my knowledge to inspire students, and I intend to become a full-time teacher sometime in the future.

I cycle everywhere in London, frequenting myself between the climbing centre in Bermondsey and the tennis courts of west London (near where my girlfriend lives). Before life in London I studied at Durham University for both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. I focused my studies on earthquakes and landslides in mountain landscapes. The Geography department sent me on a three-month placement to Nepal in order to work with an earthquake technology NGO over the summer of 2016. At Durham, I was also President of the tennis club, and spent many summers tennis coaching and tutoring to fund my university life and travels.

I am a former student, prefect and house captain of Eton College. I played 1st XV rugby, 1st VI squash and 1st VI tennis for the school, and ran a club that invited intrepid explorers to come and inspire fellow pupils to experience the outdoor world.

From my leadership positions, team sports and academic experiences over the years, I have learnt a significant amount about how to prepare, and flourish, in school, university and the working world. I am keen to influence others and help them succeed in the subjects and specialisms that I cover.

Availability: I am available to tutor on weekday evenings and most Sunday evenings. I will most likely cycle to your location, so within a reasonable distance from the Peckham Rye/Camberwell/Dulwich vicinity is helpful!

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: Having recently come out the other end of the education system, I am very proficient with essay writing, revision techniques, and exam preparation. I am a patient teacher and a firm believer in guided learning, helping the student to understand, research and critically analyse the topic themselves.

As individuals, we all have our own preferred way of learning but this may not necessarily be the way a student is taught at school. As a result of this discrepancy, we often see students that love science based subjects but hate writing essays. A lack of connection with a subject can quickly lead to a vicious circle of them falling behind, losing their confidence, and resenting the subject further. Whatever the case may be, this discrepancy in teaching styles is easily rectified with tailored 1:1 sessions that help build a more positive learning attitude.

I offer a range of different learning and essay writing techniques to help students gather and assess the correct information, quickly and efficiently make a draft, and produce an essay answer that is succinct and relevant to the question. I also offer a number of revision techniques and good study practices according to the individual’s specific needs. These may include revision flash cards, crib sheets, written practice questions, or simply talking through the subject to give the student a chance to formulate their answers out loud, fill in the gaps where necessary, and build their own confidence. Inspiring the student and creating an enthusiasm for the subject is half the battle. The other half is a combination of technique and knowledge retention.

I have been fortunate to have carried out part of my education in the private school system and am therefore able to offer some informal preparation for the entry interviews required by private/public schools.

I have a bachelor`s degree in Geography BSc (1st Class Honours) and a master`s in Risk MSc (Distinction). Prior to this, I was a pupil at Eton College where I studied A-Levels Geography (A*), Art (A*) and French (A), and in my GCSE`s I achieved 8 A*`s and 4 A`s.

If you feel that my services would benefit you then please get in touch to discuss further details.

I can’t begin to say how pleased I am with Jack. He is extremely thorough and patient. He set both my boys homework and took notes and was very prepared. He is a very personable individual.
