I am a fully qualified English Teacher (both Language and Literature) at Key Stages 3, 4 & 5 with a proven track record in state secondary education and private tutoring, based on the East Sussex/Kent border. In my roles as a part-time English Teacher in a school and a private tutor, I have consistently raised the achievement level of my pupils, often by several grades.
I have a BA Honours degree in English and American Literature. I spent many years working in the city as a solicitor, before following my true vocation of teaching, where I have found my niche. I qualified via the Schools Direct Scheme and obtained my PGCE from the University of Sussex.
I have recently completed a Master of Arts in Education at the University of Sussex with a focus on encouraging reading to improve life chances. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and I am keen to support pupils who need extra tutoring for a variety of reasons. I have experience with tutoring SEN pupils and Looked After Children.
I am passionate about teaching, and enjoy seeing the difference I can make to children’s lives. I am a highly enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well-prepared teacher with a calm, patient approach and I inspire my pupils with a love of English, giving them the confidence to do well in their exams.

My daughter got 2 grade 5s. After getting a 3 and a 4 in the mocks we were all very pleased with the English Gcse results. I think the tutoring had a significant part to play in that improvement. She needed a 5 in English language to progress to her Alevels which she is now able to do.

My daughter Esme had never liked English literature or language but when she got predicted grades of 5/6 in the summer term of Year 10, she asked for help. She had one session with 3 different tutors and said that nobody had helped her. For that reason, I gave up. But some 8 months later, after the English language mock GCSE exam in February 2026 (Year 11), Esme asked again for help. Ruth was able to offer two lessons in mid February 2026 during half term and luckily for us, a Sunday morning weekly slot became free soon after. The fact that Esme looked forward to the lessons is testament to Ruth`s skills. To my surprise, Esme started to like English literature and language and to ask Ruth to mark practice questions. I can honestly say that Esme worked very hard at English and started to get much better marks, something which her English teacher at school commented on. I cannot praise Ruth highly enough. I know that is a cliché to say this but there was no area of teaching (presentation skills, clarity, resources, marking feedback, exam technique and enjoyment value) in which Ruth could have improved. Having Ruth as a tutor also seemed to give Esme great confidence. She went into each of the exams knowing what she had to do and how to do it.
