I am a fully qualified English Teacher (both Language and Literature) at Key Stages 3, 4 & 5 with a proven track record in state secondary education and private tutoring, based on the East Sussex/Kent border. In my roles as a part-time English Teacher in a school and a private tutor, I have consistently raised the achievement level of my pupils, often by several grades.
I have a BA Honours degree in English and American Literature. I spent many years working in the city as a solicitor, before following my true vocation of teaching, where I have found my niche. I qualified via the Schools Direct Scheme and obtained my PGCE from the University of Sussex.
I have recently completed a Master of Arts in Education at the University of Sussex with a focus on encouraging reading to improve life chances. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and I am keen to support pupils who need extra tutoring for a variety of reasons. I have experience with tutoring SEN pupils and Looked After Children.
I am passionate about teaching, and enjoy seeing the difference I can make to children’s lives. I am a highly enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well-prepared teacher with a calm, patient approach and I inspire my pupils with a love of English, giving them the confidence to do well in their exams.

What a wonderful tutor! Ruth, as an English tutor, has been able to totally engage my son for 2 hours straight, as he comes away from his sessions saying how much he has enjoyed his time with Ruth over the summer during face-to-face tutorials. Ruth is totally up to date with all exam boards and hones in on what examiners are looking for in GCSE`s. She absolutely `gets` how teenagers think and what encouragement they need to be inspired about the subject. Once my son starts back in Y11 in a couple of weeks, we will continue having lessons with Ruth online lessons. We love her!

We cannot recommend Ruth highly enough. Our son started with her in January to improve his confidence and grades in English literature and language ahead of his GCSEs in May and June. His confidence and skills grew each week and he was able to apply what he was learning to other subjects as well. Ruth is incredibly professional and knowledgeable and seemed to build a great rapport with our son. He looked forward to his sessions and was keen to complete work set each week and get her feedback. We are so lucky to have found her!

Ruth was open to talk about specific needs for my child and has adapted lessons to suit. My child has been out of school for two years but has been very happy to see Ruth every week. Ruth spends a lot of time preparing for individual lessons. Highly recommended.
