Information about Alison

My aim is to boost children`s confidence and give them the tools to unlock their own learning potential. Initial assessment is vital to uncover gaps and misconceptions which may hinder progress. Children need to enjoy learning and my job is to make it as enjoyable as I can, whilst inspiring the child themselves to want to do better and achieve. Each child is unique and learns differently; at different rates and in different ways- my aim is to find the most effective methods for your child to achieve his or her potential, enjoying the process along the way.

I am a dedicated, professional tutor, (not a university student tutoring to earn some extra money on the side) as such, I am able to provide not only subject knowledge but effective, age-appropriate teaching methods, in addition to continuity and long term committment to your child`s education.

I have a B.A. in Psychology (U.S Liberal Arts degree) and a Masters in the Anthropology of Children and Child Development (Brunel University). Also a CELTA (TEFL) certificate.

Availability: Weekdays, Saturdays plus some school holidays.

In addition to weekly sessions in term time, I also offer school holiday booster courses for an additional `kickstart` and to consolidate previous learning. These sessions also work to prevent the `Learning dip` that often occurs during longer school breaks. I may be able to travel for these sessions, depending on the location, although there would be an additional cost involved.

The rate is per session. Sessions are usually around 55 minutes to allow for feedback with parents/carers at the end of the session. For younger children (P3 and below) sessions will usually be a maximum of 45 minutes as they cannot generally concentrate for much longer - especially after a long day at school!

Willing to travel: 1 miles

Experience: I have 11+ years teaching experience in a `outstanding` primary school during which time I taught all year groups from P1- P7 (Reception to Year six). I have also run booster groups for children who are under-performing within school. I have worked successfully as a private tuor for 5+ years. Due to my experience, I have an in-depth knowledge of the primary curriculum and a great wealth of experience about children and how they learn.
In addition, I have also worked as a Maths SATS marker so am aware of the mistakes children often make and know what examiners are looking for.
My CELTA qualification also means I am in a unique position to teach the new grammar components of the English curriculum; which may be useful if you are moving form the Scottish to English system. I have also worked in a tuition centre in Edinburgh so I am familiar with their `tried and tested` methods and also know that bespoke one-to-one sessions are far more effective in progressing children`s confidence and learning than a mixed age group, generic, computer-based `lesson.`
I also have a wide range of my own resources catering for all topics and learning styles- covering the Scottish and English curriculum, as well as for Independent prep.
I have reviews from students past and present on another tutoring site please contact me for details.

5/5 Rating

Our son (age 11) has really benefited from one to one time with Alison. She has covered a lot in a short space of time and directed us to useful resources to complement the work covered during her sessions. Best of all is that our son genuinely enjoys the time spent with Alison, and her approach has really motivated him. Thank-you Alison.
