Information about Emma
Patient and adapted to the student, my teaching style boosts confidence and shows learners fresh ways to approach a maths problem. I always do extra preparation for lessons when I know the topic we will do in advance, and I enjoy making my own questions and resources.
Availability: I can travel to the student`s home for lessons for an additional fee, or teach at my home.
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: I have loved maths from a very early age and I genuinely enjoy helping others to understand and do maths. I have been a self-employed private tutor since 2007 when I started in the summer holidays between finishing my A-Levels and going to Cambridge to study natural sciences. Although the number of students I have been tutoring at any one time has fluctuated a lot since then, I have consistently seen improvements in their ability and confidence. Only quite recently, in early 2018, have I turned to my tutoring in maths and science as my main source of income. I now aim to fill as much after school and reasonable weekend time with tutoring lessons, also offering much more availability and flexibility during school holidays. Before my tutoring business really took off I worked in futures trading, actuarial analysis, and pensions for Oak Capital Management, JLT Reinsurance Brokers LTD, and Barnett Waddingham respectively. I have learned valuable people skills and business sense from all my roles so far, and it is widely agreed that workplace experience makes for a better teacher!
My teaching style is very encouraging and patient, but at the same time I challenge my students to realise their own potential. For every student I help I always assess how they are coping with the material at that present moment, then try to construct questions that will push them to make connections for themselves. I dont always just show them how to answer a question, I aim to guide them through doing it by themselves. I feel this will help them a lot more when it comes to their exams!
I have considerable experience in the classroom in a school environment, both teaching and assisting. This is from my time volunteering as a helper in Maths classes at Abbot`s Hill School, (my old secondary school, near King`s Langley) as well as one term of a PGCE through Schools Direct. The latter was after I obtained a scholarship through the Institute of Physics to study for a PGCE. I taught several lessons myself, but quickly realised that class teaching was not really for me at the time. After the experience, I realised the best way I could make a difference was by helping individuals who had a strong desire to improve.
