Information about Eloise

Hello. I`m an English teacher with over 25 years` experience in the independent sector. I am also a GCSE English Examiner and specialise in teaching AQA GCSE English Language and Literature.

Before my current role, I worked at a top UK independent boarding school in Berkshire as Head of EAL (English as an Additional Language). Prior to that, I taught English in International Schools before returning to the UK to work in both independent and state schools in Dorset. I am also a qualified Librarian. Since September 2019, I have been working as an Education Consultant and online tutor for an international school in Hong Kong, but have continued one-to-one English tutoring for the AQA English Language and Literature specifications as well as examining.

I believe in a collaborative approach to learning and tailor my lessons to the student`s individual learning targets and needs. It is important that the student feels comfortable and able to express their ideas and opinions. I hope that I encourage open and honest discussion about the topics, techniques and areas for improvement. I use a wide variety of engaging resource material and adapt and reflect on my approach as the lessons progress.

Availability: Availability Update: From Monday 10th June 2024, I will have availability for new students after my current Year 11s finish their GCSE English exams. Please get in touch if you have a current Year 9 or 10 student of AQA GCSE English Language and Literature and you would like further information or to be placed on a waiting list for 1-1 tuition starting in June or classes in September. If known, please indicate your son or daughter`s set texts for GCSE Literature in the opening enquiry. Please see below for availability.

Due to the high demand for tutoring, I will also be offering two classes for AQA GCSE Language from the 9th of September 2024. These will be small classes with 2-8 students per class for Year 11s only. The classes will be at a lower rate of £30 per lesson. Students will have the opportunity to do a practice paper at the end of each 6 week half, which will be marked with personal feedback given. The final 4 week revision period will include a full Paper 1 and Paper 2 marked practice. The classes will be on Tuesdays at 5.45pm or Wednesdays at 7pm - please see below for details.

Experience: As an English Language specialist, my teaching experience has focussed on individual 1:1 tuition and small group exam courses. I tutor students aged 13-16 in English Language and Literature, in preparation for their GCSEs and the 13+ Common Entrance English Examination. My CE 13+ students have accepted places at schools including: Downe House, Magdalen College School, Oxford High School, Abingdon, St Helen and St Katherine and Cheltenham College. I also teach the Cambridge English Exams (PET, KET, FCE, CAE, CPE) and IELTS (International English Language Tests) for 16+ university and visa requirements. My students` average IELTS Bands 6.5-9.

I am an English Examiner for the 9-1 GCSEs, which means that I have a full understanding of curriculum requirements and how to maximise marks for the final examinations. My students` average GCSE grades 6-9, regularly achieving above their original target levels. This includes students whose first language is not English and those with a learning skills diagnosis.

As well as a BA(Hons) in English, I am a fully qualified Librarian with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies and 5 years experience as a Teacher Librarian. This not only enhances my understanding of literature but also enables me to improve a student`s reading and research skills. This includes reading to improve vocabulary, awareness of grammatical structures and literary devices. Whilst independent research skills are necessary for essays, extended projects, quotations and referencing.

My daughter found Eloise very good and learnt a lot that her school did not teach. My daughter had her exams and now waiting for the results. She finished both papers was very happy about them

Simply a one of kind tutor! The connection she has created with my daughter, the structured lessons, the communication with the parents are just few things that make Eloise an amazing tutor! My daughter’s confidence in English has grown, she is very active in school, finds English a real pleasure now. And all these are down to Eloise, because she knew how to guide my daughter in the right direction!

TutorHunt requests feedback after just 3-4 weeks of being introduced to a tutor.
We are very grateful we`ve found Eloise. She has quickly assessed my daughter`s requirements, plans her sessions and it`s apparent that she is very familiar with current GCSE content and how the subject is marked and examined. My daughter has felt that each session to date has been of considerable value; she feels Eloise will play a large and fundamental role in helping her prepare for GCSE English in 6 months` time.

Eloise was fabulous!
We contacted her very late in the day before my sons GCSE English literature exams!
She was helpful, calm and invaluable in her advice and tuition.
My son loved her manner and teaching style.
An absolute delight to work with.
We shall definitely be hoping to use her services again with my son in his A levels and my daughter with her GCSE’s.
Many thanks Eloise

Eloise is warm, intelligent and well informed. After her first session, my 15 yr old daughter said “ I think this will be good”. She was right! We recommend
Eloise wholeheartedly.
