Information about Eloise

An English teacher with over 25 years` experience in the independent sector and a GCSE English Examiner who specialises in teaching AQA GCSE English Language and Literature.

Before my current role, I worked at a top UK independent boarding school in Berkshire as Head of EAL (English as an Additional Language). Prior to that, I taught English in International Schools before returning to the UK to work in an independent school in Dorset. I am also a qualified Librarian. Since September 2019, I have been working as an Education Consultant and online tutor for an international school in Hong Kong, but have continued one-to-one English tutoring for the AQA English Language and Literature specifications as well as examining.

I believe in a collaborative approach to learning and tailor my lessons to the student`s individual learning targets and needs. It is important that the student feels comfortable and able to express their ideas and opinions. I hope that I encourage open and honest discussion about the topics, techniques and areas for improvement. I use a wide variety of engaging resource material and adapt and reflect on my approach as the lessons progress.

Experience: As an English Language specialist, my teaching experience has focussed on individual 1:1 tuition and small group exam courses. I tutor students aged 13-16 in English Language and Literature, in preparation for their GCSEs and the 13+ Common Entrance English Examination. My CE 13+ students have accepted places at schools including: Downe House, Magdalen College School, Oxford High School, Abingdon, St Helen and St Katherine and Cheltenham College. I also teach the Cambridge English Exams (PET, KET, FCE, CAE, CPE) and IELTS (International English Language Tests) for 16+ university and visa requirements. My students` average IELTS Bands 6.5-9.

I am an English Examiner for the 9-1 GCSEs, which means that I have a full understanding of curriculum requirements and how to maximise marks for the final examinations. My students` average GCSE grades 6-9, regularly achieving above their original target levels. This includes students whose first language is not English and those with a learning skills diagnosis.

As well as a BA(Hons) in English, I am a fully qualified Librarian with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies and 5 years experience as a Teacher Librarian. This not only enhances my understanding of literature but also enables me to improve a student`s reading and research skills. This includes reading to improve vocabulary, awareness of grammatical structures and literary devices. Whilst independent research skills are necessary for essays, extended projects, quotations and referencing.
