Information about Michael

Teaching music must be fun for the pupil and that it is essential to make lessons varied and lively. I have been involved in the teaching/coaching of brass instruments for many years and teach school age students at Richmond Music Trust, Kingston Music Services, Marymount International School and also privately. I teach all brass instruments and currently I am teaching the trumpet, French Horn, cornet, baritone and trombone. I also teach composition and music theory from beginners to advanced level.

Availability: I am quite flexible and can work around your availability. I can teach online using Zoom.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have extensive experience of teaching and coaching brass instruments from beginner to degree level. Currently I teach brass for Richmond Music Trust, Kingston Music Services and also have several private pupils of all ages. I studied the trombone at the Royal Northern College of Music with Terry Nagle (Halle) and Roger Harvey (RPO), and privately with Denis Wick. I continue to perform as an orchestral trombonist and I am first trombone for the Wimbledon Symphony Orchestra, the Surbiton Symphony Orchestra, and the Kingston Chamber Orchestra. I have a good knowledge of all the brass instruments and teach the trombone, trumpet the French horn, baritone, and the cornet.
Throughout my time as a lecturer at Kingston University (1990-2017) I have conducted and coached the Kingston University Brass Ensemble including performances at the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall and the Guildhall on several occasions.
I have experience of teaching younger brass pupils which involves liaising with parents regarding the progress of their children. I have also successfully put pupils in for Associated Board and Trinity Practical Examinations and can provide aural and theory tuition.
I am also a composer and have taught composition, music history and theory for many years at Salford and Kingston Universities.
