Information about Daniel
I am 29 years old and hold an MA in Philosophy and History of Science and a BSc in Biomedical Science. I am currently studying for a PhD at the University of Kent. I offer tuition in all sciences up to GCSE, and Biology and Philosophy at A-Level.
As I am still in education, I know what it is like to be going through what can seem like unending pressure to achieve, to get things right and to try to understand subjects that appear to be far beyond by own grasp. Throughout my education I have obtained a substantial body of knowledge throughout the sciences, and I wish to pass this on while helping young people achieve their academic goals. I have a passion for all things science, and beyond academic performance, I would like to inculcate this in the next generation of learners. I aim to improve any grade to a desired level, or to consolidate and continue a high achievement.
My Approach -
I believe that no matter what Grades may say, every person has the ability to understand the most complex of scientific concepts. But I find that interesting people in those concepts and finding applications to facilitate that interest is usually key to increasing understanding and improving performance in weaker subject areas.
Focusing the learning to the tutee`s individual needs and abilities is something I concentrate on - I see tutoring as giving that extra focus that is unavailable in schools, where one young person can easily blend in to the next.
I also concentrate on ensuring that the students basic knowledge is secure so that a full complement of theoretical and experimental knowledge can be built and maintained. Applying this to exam questions is another skill entirely and I spend time looking not just at relevant exam questions, but at how the questions should be approached and how they are constructed to test the students abilities.
The actual tutoring usually consists of covering what the tutee has done in school in the past week, and highlighting any weak areas within that content that we can discuss and improve. If there are any past topics that the student has really struggled with then I will prepare a lecture-style delivery of the content. Within this, we will focus on improving the general skills needed to succeed in Academic Science, such as: memory and recall skills scientific writing structuring explanations and long answers utilising prior knowledge to tackle novel problems. This is then oriented towards the ability to answer exam style questions successfully.
Availability: I am available all weekdays, and some weekends.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I have private tutored at GCSE and A-Level for 6 years, and I currently teach at undergraduate degree level. A large part of my research work involves giving talks on a wide range of subjects, such as clinical research, reasoning, and medical methodology. The skills I have developed during this time considerably help me in communicating scientific knowledge in an understandable and engaging way to my tutees.
