Information about Gillian
My name Gill and am happy to tutor students from Pateley Bridge, Ripon, Harrogate, Otley or nearby.
I am qualified as a Science/Biology teacher with a BSci (Hons) in Biological and Biological Sciences and a PhD in Molecular Biology.
For the past 4 years I have been tutoring children in a local High School who are underachieving in science particularly biology. I have achieved very good results.
I am very patient. I like to focus on exam techniques and practice papers.
I am also employed as team leader and mark OCR GCSE biology papers.
Availability: Flexible, evenings and weekends by arrangement.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: Following a career change in 1989, I studied for both a BSc (Hons) in Biological & Biochemical Sciences, a PGCE and a PhD in Molecular Biology as a mature student.
I gained teaching experience of GCSE and GCE A` level Biology and Science for Hair and Beauty Studies students during 1993-1994. I also acted as science tutor on a PGCE course from 1994-1998.
Following this, I was employed continuously for 11 years by the University of Leeds as a Research Fellow. In 2003 I gained promotion to Senior Research Fellow. My research interests during this time have primarily been the identification of target(s) for chemoprevention of colorectal cancer. I made a major contribution to Leeds research in the area of colorectal cancer, gained first authorship on 7 peer reviewed manuscri pts and co-authorship on another 7 manuscri pts.
In addition I have acted as tutor on the University of Leeds MBChB course, co-supervised junior post-doctoral scientists, PhD and MD students and been involved in several successful applications for grant funding.
In July 2010 I l left employment at the University of Leeds (Voluntary Leavers Scheme) in order to seek new opportunities and challenges and in particular a better work-life balance.
I am employed as Assistant Examiner for OCR Examinations Board marking the GCSE Biology Higher paper and for the past two years act as Team Leader for the OCR. Since April 2011, I have been employed on a part time basis at Nidderdale High School and Community College.
Since then my role has developed to be mainly tutoring of students underachieving in GCSE Science (specialism Biology). Occasionally I work with SEN students. In addition I have supervise 20-25 students (age group 11-16) during lunch and break times. I am involved in the organisation and implementation of GCSE controlled assessments. Further experience has been gained when I covered the timetable of the biology teacher during illness for several weeks. I taught biology to years 8, 9, 10, 11 upper and lower sets. In the academic year 2013-2014 I taught year 7 lower set biology.
My range of work experience has allowed me to develop a high range of transferable skills and enabled me to adapt to new situations. I have experience of teaching at different levels and age groups. In summary I am well qualified for private tutoring of GCSE, AS and A2 biology and have achieved very good results.
