Information about Thomas
Hi there, my name is Thomas, I am a full time Secondary School Teacher of Science in the borough of Barnet and I am the Head of the Science Department. I have a great passion for teaching all Sciences and have a total of eight years teaching experience at Secondary School and Sixth Form level, teaching pupils of all abilities with the skill-set of ensuring all learners are able to access the curriculum including EAL, SEN, and higher ability. I am also a AQA examiner and a professional Science tutor supporting students with their studies from year 7 to 13 for the past 5 years.
Availability: I am available weekday evenings and on weekends (mornings/early afternoons).
If you would like to hire me for extended periods e.g. half term I am also available.
I run my tutoring sessions on a one-one basis and sometimes offer group sessions where necessary (at a discounted rate). Every lesson has a PowerPoint Presentation, which is sent to the student/parent at the end of the lesson. Every lesson includes a particular focus on practicing exam technique and applying knowledge of practical skills required from the new syllabus.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I have a total of 10 years teaching experience working in four different comprehensive state schools, one of which was an all girls Catholic School and two mixed gender Schools in inner London assisting with the leadership of the Science Department. All Schools have been rated Good/Outstanding in their latest Ofsted inspection and I have taught and familiar with all exam boards ranging from:
- AQA, Edexcel(9-1), and IGCSE (9-1).
As Head of Science, I have managed the radical changes of the new curriculum. I supported my department with the change in structure of the Science curriculum and strategically devised new schemes of work and assessment using innovative ideas to develop a 21st century curriculum that was fit for purpose and served the pupils by promoting a curiosity for learning.
I am also an AQA examiner so have plenty of experience in preparing pupils and providing useful tips for their End of Year exams, mock GCSE exams, GCSE exams, and A levels.
I have gained vast experience in curriculum building, engaging pupils, differentiating and delivering varied lessons to suit students of all abilities (KS3-KS5). In addition, I have also been responsible for running STEM Club, sustainability projects and lead the Eco council of the school for the past 3 years. This has undoubtedly developed my skills in building strong, professional, relationships which has helped build Science capital amongst the School and had a positive impact back in the classroom.
I find great enjoyment and take pride in bridging the gap in pupil attainment. I enjoy spending one-one time with students to explain and define abstract Scientific concepts with the aim to clear any misconceptions and increase pupil achievement.
During the academic year of 2017/18 my Science department`s results:
73% 9-4 - with 25.3% achieving a 9-7.
This translates to an overall progress 8 score of +0.31 and the higher ability cohort scoring +0.56, resulting in both attainment and progress scores significantly exceeding the national average.
During the academic year of 2016/17 my GCSE class results:
100% A*- C (98% A*- B) for Y11 Triple Science (27 students)
100% A*- C (90% A*- B) for Y11 Additional Science (26 students)
Outstanding results both from my students at school and those who I tutor privately (Data available upon request).
