Information about Michael
Hi, I`m Michael! Born and raised in the North East, I graduated from Oxford University in 2018 with a 1st class degree in English Language and Literature, gaining a Gibbs Prize for academic achievement. I`m now based in York studying for an MA. I`ve always loved reading, and English allowed me to dig deeper into texts I loved. However, it can be a struggle to get into at times, and I`m committed to helping people learn practical ways to get to grips with texts and analyse them intelligently.
I tutor at a variety of levels, from primary through to undergraduate. I also provide tailored support around university applications, whether specific to Oxford (ELAT tests and interviews) or general (personal statements).
I tailor all my sessions to the individual student; Ill ask you whether you want to focus on certain texts or general skill-building, whether exam questions will be helpful, and how you prefer to learn. Whatever our focus, my approach will be warm, encouraging, and supportive. Oh, and most importantly fun!
My aim is to build confidence in your own abilities and enjoyment of the subject, and then give you a toolbox to help you translate that raw ability into good marks. I like to strike a good balance between studying for enjoyment and interest, and focusing on strategies to impress examiners - that way we can have our cake and eat it.
Availability: I`m available throughout the week and at weekends - contact me to ask for specific times and availability.
Willing to travel: 2 miles
Experience: Throughout my undergraduate degree, I tutored GCSE and iGCSE English pupils in a local school, particularly helping those on the C/D borderline. I supported both language and literature study, plus general confidence building and exam technique.
More recently I`ve supported Year 12 English students to prepare for undergraduate study, focusing on essay techniques and set texts, with some extra advice on the application process.
