I am a highly experienced teacher of English Language and Literature, a GCSE English Examiner and former 2nd in English at a top independent school with responsibility for KS4. I have taught for over 25 years in state, private and international schools as both an English and EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher. I have been tutoring students online since 2021.

I have spent the last decade working in a highly academic school, where no student achieves below grade 6 in English, even if they have received a learning skills diagnosis or their first language is not English. Many students benefit from the individual and collaborative attention of 1-1 lessons, which encourage them to actively participate and take control of their own learning. 1-1 students frequently gain confidence in their own ability and feel more able to ask questions and voice concerns.

Since 2023, I have been working part-time for my current employer. This has enabled me to devote more time to tutoring, which I find immensely rewarding.

I am also offering a class for AQA GCSE Language from the 5th of September 2024. This is a small group for Year 11s only. The classes are at a lower rate of £30 per lesson. Students have the opportunity to complete a practice paper at the end of each 6 week half, which will be marked with personal feedback given. The final 4 week revision period will include a full Paper 1 and Paper 2 marked practice. The class is on Saturday mornings at 11.30 and new students are welcome to join at any point in the year.

Please note that I only teach GCSE and A Level students who follow AQA courses as this is my area of expertise.

Experience: I am currently working for a top UK independent school. I have over 25 years of teaching experience in the state and independent sectors, including in international schools. I have taught a wide variety of students from different backgrounds and nationalities.

In my role as 2nd in English Department, I had full responsibility for GCSE KS4. This role includes planning departmental Schemes of Work, setting mock exam papers, attending AQA training sessions, mentoring PGCE students and having an up to date knowledge of the AQA GCSE English curriculum requirements. As an English examiner for the 9-1 GCSEs, I feedback to my own English department about current marking practices and how to teach in order to maximise grades.

As well as having a PGCE and BA(Hons) in History and English, I am also a qualified EAL teacher. This means that I have extensive knowledge and experience of teaching English as an Additional Language to students whose first language is not English.
