Information about Margaret
I am an outgoing individual with a passion for the mechanisms and interactions that make up our natural environment and the organisms which inhabit it -including humans. Having pursued a successful career in biological research (from snails to genetics and human medicine) with publications in high profile academic journals, I now want to ensure that there is a new generation of scientists to take up the challenges presented by new technologies and a changing environment.
But I also like to think that I can help to inspire anyone who is interested to learn more about biology -from understanding how DNA works to how earthworms and bees are vital to our well-being.
I am happy to provide tutoring to people of all abilities from age 11 to 110 and can deliver one-off lessons/seminars or a scheduled series.
Teaching sessions are each adapted to individual needs and work plans are drawn up ater an initial discussion, but these remain flexible and any particularly challenging topics can be re-visited when appropriate.
I can provide: 1) formal tutoring in all biological topics (UK examination boards) for those who need some extra support outside of school at A-level and GCSE. 2) interactive discussions/seminar style lessons to support those in higher education/gap years. 3) informal discussions/seminars for adults who want to expand their knowledge of biology/biological environments for their own enjoyment or to support their children/grandchildren.
Availability: Daytime -evenings
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: I have an honours degree in Microbiology from The University of Surrey, a Masters Degree in Biomolecular Organisation (University of London) and a Doctorate in Molecular Genetics (Royal Postgraduate Medical School). I am qualified to teach in higher education (member of higher education authority), and as a lecturer at Imperial College London and as a Research Scientist at various London teaching hospitals I have taught and supervised BSc, MSc and PhD students, mainly concentrating on molecular/cell biology and genetics.
As many of the basic principles of teaching are common to Secondary School and Higher Education I am equally comfortable tutoring students of school age. As a STEM ambassador I have participated in and organised events to inspire students take up science subjects, ranging from biology clubs and pond dipping to mock interviews and career talks. As a volunteer guide at a local wildlife centre I introduce people of all ages to the enjoyment of watching wildlife. And in my professional capacity I have delivered scientific seminars to people of many backgrounds -from scientists and journalists to TV personalities and patient groups.
