Information about Abigail

I am an Oxford University history graduate based in London, available for one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions. What interests me is helping each student to develop his or her intellectual curiosity in a way that also fulfils the rigorous requirements of the educational system.

My areas of specialism are History, English and Religious Studies up to and including A-Level. As an Oxford history graduate, I can also provide help preparing for the interview process and the entrance examination.

Applying to university can be a daunting task. The individual tutoring and guidance I received in preparation for university interviews and for the Oxford History Aptitude Test (HAT) was invaluable in improving my ability to articulate my ideas, developing my lateral thinking, and last but not least, in building confidence. Individual preparation is a key part of fine-tuning the skills that elite universities want to see mock interviews with a tutor allow students to develop and practise those skills in advance of this high-pressure and high-stakes context.

Through one-on-one tutoring for potential Oxbridge applicants, I offer both targeted Oxford HAT coaching – going through past papers to help students develop and practise the skills demanded – and more general interview preparation.

I combine an open, conversational approach to learning with a keen understanding of the specific educational requirements at each level. Individual tuition affords students the space to identify and target problem areas away from the pressure of the classroom. Consequently, tailored learning is at the heart of my approach. I aim to get to know each student`s learning habits – both strengths and weaknesses – so that we can work effectively towards their study goals in a coordinated and focused manner.

Experience: London: I have been working as a tutor in London for the past 18 months, and have worked with several students ranging from 5 years old to 18 years old. I am working with A level students and supporting pupils with their preparation for their common entrance.

Oxford: As president of the history society at my college at Oxford, I was responsible for mentoring students. This entailed providing support and advice to guide them through the demands and pressures of an Oxford history degree.

Lancaster: During my time at Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, I mentored younger pupils in academic matters, as well as offering help with time management and social matters. As Head Girl I was focused on creating an environment that fostered academic excellence, pushing pupils to achieve their potential within a supportive and encouraging environment.

Peru: I spent several months teaching English with a Peruvian charity, Suyai Wari. The educational resources were scant, and when I arrived the pupils had virtually no English skills. Working with the classes was both challenging and rewarding, and watching the strides some of the pupils eventually made was remarkable.
