Information about Nik

Struggling with your degree or didn`t get the A-Level, or GCSE results you were hoping for? Need to resit some exams next year? Don`t worry, I can help you pull your grades up.

A lot of the time the problem lies with difficulty performing under exam conditions. This is not something taught by teachers at schools, who have to focus solely on the content of the syllabus. I offer an approach to teaching with equal focus on scientific content and exam technique tailored to each individual student`s needs.

I`m a skilled communicator with a passion for teaching and many years of experience tutoring a number of different subjects including chemistry, biology, maths (statistics for biosciences).

As a scientist currently working in the research field I feel I have an advantage over some school science teachers because I am more up to date with current practice and can give relevant examples to students. I have recently completed a PhD in Chemistry and have a number of published works on the topic of graphene electrochemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
================================

***How long is a lesson?***

Typically I teach in two hour sessions, but longer lessons can be arranged if necessary. Lesson times of less than an hour are not possible due to the fact that the subject matter and subsequent reinforcement of learning cannot be done successfully in less than two hours.

***How often should I have lessons?***

This is entirely up to you and your needs. It will also depend on when in the academic year you start tuition. If you are starting from September then fortnightly lessons may be sufficient, however if you’re starting lessons after January then I would recommend weekly sessions. If you’re preparing for your A-Levels then I would certainly recommend weekly lessons from February onwards, even if you have started out with fortnightly lessons. Lesson frequency of less than fortnightly is not recommended for anything other than tying up loose ends as it is just too long between lessons for things to sink in properly.

***Can you teach more than one student at a time?***

I prefer not to do this, but I have done so in the past. However, the hourly rate will be different, please get in touch for more information on this.

***Do you offer online tuition?***

Personally I feel that face to face lessons are more effective. But on the odd occasion I have had the need to teach online. Please enquire as to the logistics of this if you require online tuition.

***Where will the lessons be held?***

Lessons can be held at any residence of your choosing. The only thing I ask is that I will need to have a wireless internet connection. I try not to teach in public spaces like libraries and coffee shops, however I have done this on special occasions in the past. I am happy for you to come to my house for lessons if there is nowhere else suitable.

***How do I pay you?***

I am happy to be paid in cash or by bank transfer. All I ask is that payment is made before I leave at the end of the lesson so I don’t have to dedicate extra time to chasing payments.

***Can we exchange contact details without paying for them?***

This is not possible as TutorHunt automatically censors any contact information that is sent before payment has been made. There is no way for me to circumvent this feature, even if I wanted to.

***When are you free for lessons?***

I teach on any weekday evening, with lessons needing to start no later than 5 pm. I am also free during the day, so if that is an option for you it will make it much easier to find a mutually convenient time. I also teach at the weekend. As for my current availability you will have to get in touch as it does change frequently.

***What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?***

This is totally fine and does happen from time to time. All I ask is that you give me at least 24 hours notice so that I can offer the space to another student.

Availability: I am available to tutor on Saturday afternoons as well as weekday afternoons and evenings. Lessons can be either in the student`s home or online.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: I have been a tutor for nearly 10 years now. I have previous experience of working with young people, am friendly and outgoing, a skilled communicator and a passion for science.
