Information about Ramandeep Singh

-I am a Surface Chemistry & Vibrational Spectroscopy Ph.D. student at the University of Glasgow who has independently conducted a series of research projects covering a diverse array of complex problems during my undergraduate and postgraduate tenure in a host of different research groups both in the UK and further abroad.

- I endeavor to provide students with an in-depth understanding of chemistry relevant to their academic level, I take a "top-down" approach to chemistry, in the hope of breaking down more complex and abstracts and concepts so that they are easy to digest for the student.

- I teaching online using a whiteboard app, I also provide students with a "fact-sheet" at the end of class which summarises in detail the points covered during our session, I also provide problem sets for students which are covered at the start of each class.

Availability: - I aim to make myself available during the weekday from 6 pm onwards.

- I am available on the weekends throughout the day (morning, afternoon and evening)

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: College of Science and Engineering, School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow
Postgraduate project: Surface Chemistry and Heterogeneous Catalysis Research Group
07.10.2019–30.03.2020
My postgraduate project can be summarized as, “The addition of CO2 to the syngas feedstream over
iron-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts”. This project allowed me to gain an appreciation and
detailed understanding of the Fischer-Tropsch process, specifically the chemistry surrounding changes to the water gas shift reaction and the hydrocarbonaceous laydown taking place during the different stages of the reaction.

College of Science and Engineering, School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow
Undergraduate project: Ganin Group
08.09.2018–28.02.2019
My final year undergraduate project was based on “Synthesis and characterization of novel
electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction”. Whilst working on this project, I became familiar
with solid-state inorganic methodologies for the generation of transition metal carbides and nitrides,
which were characterized using PXRD, to ensure consistent phase purity, which was followed by
catalytic testing using an electrochemical cell.

During my placement year, I undertook an exciting research project in the Netherlands, where I worked
independently on a challenging project titled, “The design and synthesis of functionalized organic
ligands for homochiral metal-organic frameworks and their catalytic applications”. During this project
I became familiarized with both organic and inorganic laboratory techniques (e.g., Suzuki coupling,
amide coupling, rotary evaporation, both flash and column chromatography, and MOF self-assembly)
as well as gaining experience using a variety of different characterization techniques (e.g., 1H NMR,
13C NMR, HPLC, TGA, and PXRD), in order to synthesis a suite of L-proline decorated organic linkers
for use in the formation of MOF-74 assemblies, which would ultimately be tested as heterogeneous
catalysts for simple Aldol chemistry.
