Information about Jennifer

My aim is to help all pupils to enjoy Maths more and achieve their potential by developing their understanding. This leads to increased confidence and hence improved grades at exam time.

In 1985, with A-levels in Maths, Statistics, Physics and Music, I joined GEC-Marconi as an apprentice and over the next two years completed an HNC in electronic engineering. I continued my employment at Marconi as a test equipment design and commissioning engineer until my first child arrived in 1993. I was lucky enough to be able to spend the next 12 years at home, raising my three daughters.

When my third child started school in 2005, I returned to work as a Teaching Assistant supporting Maths and Science classes. I enjoyed this so much, that in 2007 I returned to studying and completed a degree in Mathematics and its learning with the Open University which was awarded with 1st class Honours in December 2012. This qualification has deepened my understanding of the mathematical content required to succeed at GCSE and A-level, and also allowed me to develop my knowledge of the many different ways in which students learn. In July 2016 I completed my Professional Graduate Certificate of Education in the Further Education sector and qualified as a teacher. As a recent student myself, I can remember the frustration and concern experienced by all students when they struggle to understand the concepts presented to them.

In my leisure time I play the clarinet in a local concert band and lead a group of musicians who provide the music at family services at my local church.

Availability: With the start of the new school year many of my tutees have succeeded in their studies so I currently have sessions available during the school day and every evening except for Thursday..I am currently fully booked during term time.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I provide one-to-one sessions at GCSE and A-level and have also worked with adults preparing for the numeracy tests required by potential employers.

As a teaching assistant and now a teacher, I have experience of supporting the learning of pupils of all abilities and have worked with a wide range of students, including those identified as having additional needs, both in the classroom and at their home as a tutor.

I have now completed my training as a teacher in the Further Education Sector and I enjoy encouraging those who require further support to develop their understanding and attain the GCSE grade required for future employment which has eluded them so far on their journey through education. I also have experience of teaching Maths and Further Maths to students who have chosen to study Maths at A-level.

My role as a tutor is not to replace the teacher but to support the learning that has already taken place at school and improve the tutee`s understanding of the subject. Tuition sessions provide extra opportunities to consolidate knowledge and build confidence by exploring the Mathematics at a slower pace than can be provided in school. I encourage the tutee to discuss their understanding of the topic with me so that any misconceptions can be identified and addressed, allowing the session to be focussed on the individual, personalising the learning and enabling them to fulfil their potential. This may be achieved by assisting with particular areas of difficulty or by providing more general help throughout the subject.

My aim is to help all pupils to achieve their potential by developing their understanding. Recently my tutoring work has included students at GCSE and A-level, as well as adult learners who are preparing for employment admission tests, enabling them to improve their understanding and confidence, and hence achieve a more successful outcome when they sit their examination as well as providing the opportunity to enjoy Maths more.
