Information about Daniel
A friendly tutor who always looks to make sessions engaging and fun. Having worked with students of lower abilities and learning difficulties, I am particularly skilled in igniting passion for my subjects for those who are struggling . I am equally at home working with students who might be incredibly academically bright but are alienated by the classroom environment. With experience working in primary and SEN education, as well as tutoring the GCSE and A-Level syllabi, I welcome students of all ages.
I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge with a degree in English, where I wrote first-class dissertations on the works of Ernest Hemingway and Alice Munro. I also took a particular interest in contemporary dramaturgy and academic studies of the Classical Hollywood era. Prior to this I attended Sutton Grammar School, leaving with five A-Levels (3 A*s and 2 As) and 10 A*s at GCSE. My childhood having been shared between Paris and London, I am a native speaker of French, and a fluent Spanish speaker. I have a love of theatre directing, and have recently returned from the prestigious Footlights Tour, which travelled across the UK and America. Previous participants include Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and David Mitchell. In the coming months, I will be working on shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and on London`s West End.
I carry my approach to directing theatre across to the classroom. Students need to be engaged in order to learn. Understanding the rules of engagement in approaching exams helps in removing the anxiety of uncertainty. From our first session, I make sure students know what the examiner expects of them, and how their work can be focussed to meet those expectations. In both English and French, sessions are structured around the practical application of knowledge: in English through the `practical criticism` style of close reading taught at Cambridge, and in French through the discussion of real-life scenarios. Above all, there is always the scope to adapt the session to focus on a passage or facet of language which piques the student`s interest.
Daniel was lovely, and really good at helping me prepare for my interview. He encouraged me to think laterally and showed me how to answer questions calmly. (Olivia, accepted to Homerton College, Cambridge in 2017)
Availability: 9am - 9pm, Monday to Saturday (theatrical commitments may sometimes mean I have to be flexible)
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: I specialise in teaching English, French, Spanish and Drama.
I am a teaching assistant for SEN students, ages 4 to 19.
Having been a student at the University of Cambridge, I understand the skills and mindset sought after when making university applications.
I volunteered at a local primary school for three years, working with young children across the age groups.

Daniel was a tremendous help and was very flexible. Our daughter was able to discuss her questions and Daniel gave her the feedback she needed.

Daniel is a great tutor. I`ve only wanted to learn french informally and in 6 months ive gone from absolute beginner to being able to hold a conversation (just about!)... I`d certainly recommend him for anyone wanting to learn french just for fun! But given my experience with him I expect he would be great as well if you were studying for exams etc. Merci beaucoup Dan!
