Very often I get asked by a learner about the latest, greatest piece of equipment: is it good, should they get it? Will it make them sound like X artist that they admire? Should they get this sequencer or that sequencer? What plugins should they get? etc etc.

My usual answer is, "I have absolutely no idea but try to get the results with what you`ve already got first". Too often students are blinded by the marketing hype and `gear lust`: if only they had X piece of equipment, their music would improve immeasurable and fame and fortune will surely follow.

Looking at things a little closer, did you know, for example that, apart from minor variations, all standard digital EQs are essentially the same? That`s right, that £500 wonder plugin you just bought may have a very nice, intuitive GUI but actually does nothing more for your music than the EQ already built into your DAW. It`s not the EQ that`s important, it`s the person that`s using it.

An old axiom always rings true unfortunately - garbage in, garbage out.

Why is it that a man with a homemade guitar made from a plank of wood and only two strings can make music that can make the Gods weep and yet someone with the latest, greatest £2000 guitar plainly still has a long way to go?

So what`s the secret? The secret is: there is no secret apart from learning, understanding, application, hard work, and progression.
