One thing all good trainers must make time for is continous professional development (CPD )and I take this very seriously to the point of making time two or three times each year to attend amateur workshops as a player rather than a teacher.

I play with a `grass roots` town band, which is a family band which plays at local events just for fun and to raise money for local charity events and sometimes a little further afield. One weekend before christmas we went along to join in a workshop which was being run by another family band which we had become friends with during a week long residential annual workshop. The format was mainly a couple of days worth of sight reading as a full band with some more in depth rehearsal on six pieces which would be played at a local pub on the following day on the way home as an informal concert.

When I play on this kind of event I always end up doing some coaching from within the section as I make a point of never sitting up on the solo stand, that wouldn`t be fair. I sit either 2nd or 3rd and help out as best I can. The weekend was a complete success, and a return visit is planned for this April. The concert in the pub grounds went well just missing a downpour, which is something we all have to put up with during the band concert season.
